Quake measuring 7.3 rocks Haiti, tsunami warning issued
Updated at: 0230 PST, Wednesday, January 13, 2010

PORT AU PRINCE: A quake measuring 7.3 on the moment magnitude scale shook the impoverished Caribbean nation of Haiti Tuesday, rocking the capital city, officials and media witnesses said.

A US government agency has issued a tsunami warning for countries bordering the Caribbean sea, after a powerful 7.3 quake rocked Haiti.

"This message applies to countries within and bordering the Caribbean sea," the Pacific Tsunami Warning center said, "except for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands."

A huge quake measuring 7.0 rocked the impoverished Caribbean nation of Haiti Tuesday toppling buildings and causing widespread damage and panic, officials and, media witnesses said.

A tsunami alert was immediately issued for the Caribbean region after the earthquake struck at 2153 GMT.

A correspondent said the ground shook for more than a minute. Just minutes later two aftershocks measuring both 5.9 and 5.5 on the moment magnitude scale hit, US officials said.

"I think it's really a catastrophe of major proportions," the country's ambassador to the United States, Raymond Alcide Joseph, told media.

The US Geological Survey said the powerful quake was initially measured at 7.3 on the scale and struck 16 kilometers (ten miles) from the capital Port-Au-Prince, and 27 kilometers (17 miles) from Petionville.

An AFP correspondent in Petionville said one three-story building, housing two offices, was toppled, and a tractor was already at the scene trying to dig out victims as people fled onto the streets in panic.

The up-scale area is home to many foreign diplomats and members of a major United Nations mission to the country.

The temblor struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), the USGS said.

A tsunami warning was in place for Haiti, Cuba, the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic, with the first waves predicted to hit Haiti shortly.

The ambassador told media he was heartbroken as he had just spoken by telephone with a senior presidential aide who described scenes of chaos and devastation.

"He had to stop his car just about half an hour ago, and take to the streets, start walking, but he said houses were crumbling on the right side of the street and the left side of the street," Joseph said.

"He does not know whether he would reach his home, not knowing what he would find, because he had a bridge to cross to get there."

A US Coast Guard spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson in Florida said they did not have much information yet, saying they had not yet been able to contact their office in Haiti.

"We haven't taken any measure in the area so far. We don't have any information rather that what we got from the news," she told media.

"We couldn't contact our officer there yet, so we are waiting to have more information in a couple of hours."

Already the poorest nation in the Americas, Haiti has been hit by a series of disasters recently and was battered by hurricanes in 2008.

The country was also gripped by a tense political standoff in April 2008 amid riots over skyrocketing food prices.

Seventy percent of Haiti's population lives on less than two dollars per day and half of its 8.5 million people are unemployed.

According to official figures, food insecurity already affects more than a quarter of Haiti's population, some 1.9 million people, with women and children the worst affected.

The Food and Agriculture Organization has designated Haiti as one of the world's most economically vulnerable countries.

The WFP serves one meal a day to more than 500,000 Haitian schoolchildren, providing them with what is often their only meal of the day.

The organization also feeds 100,000 women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and 50,000 children under the age of five.

Since mid-2004, the Brazilian-led MINUSTAH has been keeping the peace in the impoverished Caribbean island nation.

WASHINGTON: US authorities on Tuesday rushed search-and rescue teams to earthquake-hit Haiti as President Barack Obama offered his sympathy to the impoverished Caribbean nation.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) said it was sending disaster response teams made up of 72 personnel, six search-and-rescue dogs and up to 48 tons of rescue equipment.

"This is a tragic situation and we will work alongside the Haitian government to provide immediate assistance in the rescue effort," said USAID administrator Rajiv Shah, who has been in office less than a week.

India gives Haiti $1 mn for emergency relief, Indian peacekeepers safe
Thu, Jan 14 08:44 PM

New Delhi, Jan 14 (IANS) India will give $1 million in cash for immediate emergency relief in quake-devastated Haiti. Indian peacekeepers and civilian police officers in the island nation have been ascertained to be safe.

Tens of thousands of people are feared dead in Tuesday's 7.0 magnitude quake that has reduced the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, to rubble.

Stating that India was 'deeply saddened at the death and destruction' due to the quake, the Indian government Thursday decided 'to give $1 million in cash to Haiti for immediate and emergency relief purposes'.

A statement issued by External Affairs ministry said that while communications with Haiti were still very difficult, it had been ascertained that all 140 Indian United Nations peacekeepers were safe, as were all civil police officers deployed with the United Nations Mission in Haiti.

But the fate of 40-50 Indian families, including several nuns working with Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity who live scattered around the islands, is still not known. 'There is no news of them,' said an official.

The ministry is in touch with the Indian embassy in Cuba, which is concurrently accredited to Haiti, to 'ascertain the welfare of other Indian nationals who are presently in Haiti'.

40,000 to 50,000 killed in Haiti quake: Red Cross
Updated at: 0640 PST, Friday, January 15, 2010

PANAMA CITY: Between 40,000 and 50,000 people were killed in the Haiti quake, the International Red Cross said on Thursday.

"The main figures have been given by the Haiti government, and they are talking about 40,000 to 50,000 people having been killed," said Xavier Castellanos, head of the Americas zone of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

"The scale of this event means the toll will be high and the figure given by the government is likely the right one," he said.

Castellanos added that "at least three million people had been directly affected. That's to say a third of the population."

Haitian officials had earlier warned that the overall death toll from the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that ripped across the poorest nation in the Americas on Tuesday may top 100,000.

Chavez and the Russian Fleet: U.S. Used “Earthquake Weapon” On Haiti

Kurt Nimmo

January 23, 2010

Earlier this week, a Spanish newspaper quoted Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez as saying the U.S. Navy caused the Haiti earthquake with a tectonic weapon. The Venezuelan media reported that the earthquake “may be associated with the project called HAARP, a system that can generate violent and unexpected changes in climate,” Press TV reported on January 21.

Chavez cited a report from Russia’s Northern Fleet. According to the report, the U.S. Navy made a mistake with a secret “earthquake weapon” and the result was the Haitian earthquake. The Russians believe the intended target was Iran. “Though Russian Northern Fleets’ report was not confirmed by official sources, the comments attracted special attention in some US and Russian media outlets including Fox news and Russia Today,” writes Pragmatic Witness blog. “Russia Today’s report said that Moscow has also been accused of possessing and utilizing such weapons.”

“Speaking on his weekly television show, Chavez opined that the U.S. mission in Haiti was a ruse to initiate military occupation,” the New York Daily News said.

Venezuelan media “added that the U.S. government’s HAARP program, an atmospheric research facility in Alaska (and frequent subject of conspiracy theories), was also to blame for a Jan. 9 quake in Eureka, Calif., and may have been behind the 7.8-magnitude quake in China that killed nearly 90,000 people in 2008,” Fox News reported on Thursday.

In 1997, former U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen made the following statement:

Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves… So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations…It’s real, and that’s the reason why we have to intensify our [counterterrorism] efforts.

Cohen was talking about longitudinal EM wave interferometers (LWI) technology (also known as “Tesla howitzers”). LWI waves can effortlessly pass through the ocean and earth. Experts claim LWI waves can in fact pass through the earth and emerge on the other side. The United States and Russia have possessed this technology for decades.

Cohen would have you believe it is a technology that only terrorists would use. It depends on who you would call a terrorist.

In 1966, Professor Gordon J. F. MacDonald, associate director of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California, Los Angeles, was a member of the President’s Science Advisory Committee. MacDonald published papers on the use of environmental-control technologies for military purposes, including “earthquake engineering” (he also wrote about weather manipulation, climate modification, polar ice cap melting or destabilization, ozone depletion techniques).

“The revealed secrets surprised legislators,” writes Dr. Nick Begich. “Would an inquiry into the state of the art of electromagnetic manipulation surprise lawmakers today? They may find out that technologies developed out of the HAARP experiments in Alaska could deliver on Gordon MacDonald’s vision because leading-edge scientists are describing global weather as not only air pressure and thermal systems, but also as an electrical system.”
