Qatar said on Saturday it does not fear any military retaliation for refusing to meet a Monday deadline to comply with a list of demands from four Arab states that have imposed a de-facto blockade on the Gulf nation.

During a visit to Rome, foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani again rejected the demands as an infringement on Qatar’s sovereignty. He said any country is free to raise grievances with Qatar, provided they have proof, but said any such conflicts should be worked out through negotiation, not by imposing ultimatums.

“We believe that the world is governed by international laws, that don’t allow big countries to bully small countries,” he told a press conference in Italy. “No one has the right to issue to a sovereign country an ultimatum.”

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates cut diplomatic ties with Qatar last month and shut down land, sea and air links. They issued a 13-point list of demands, including curbing diplomatic ties to Iran, severing ties with the Muslim Brotherhood and shuttering the Al-Jazeera news network. They accuse Qatar of supporting regional terror groups, a charge Qatar denies.

Al Thani rejected the demands and said they were never meant to be accepted.
“There is no fear from whatever action would be taken; Qatar is prepared to face whatever consequences,” he said. “But as I have mentioned ... there is an international law that should not be violated and there is a border that should not be crossed.”

While in Rome, Al Thani met with Italian foreign minister Angelino Alfano, who backed the Kuwait-led mediation effort and urged the countries involved in the standoff to “abstain from further actions that could aggravate the situation”.

He added that he hoped Italian companies could further consolidate their presence in Qatar.

Turkey's Erdogan says Arab demands on Qatar unlawful

By Mehmet Caliskan | ISTANBUL
President Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday dismissed calls for Turkey to close a military base in Qatar and said a wider list of demands issued by four Arab states was an unlawful intervention against the Gulf state's sovereignty.

In his strongest statement of support for Qatar in the nearly three-week-old crisis centered on the Gulf state, Erdogan said the call to withdraw Turkish forces was disrespectful and that Doha - which described the demands as unreasonable - was taking the right approach.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain imposed a boycott on June 5 on Qatar and issued 13 demands including closing Al Jazeera television, curbing relations with Iran, shutting the Turkish base and paying reparations.

Doha said it was reviewing the list, but said it was not reasonable or actionable.

"We approve and appreciate the attitude of Qatar against the list of 13 demands," Erdogan, speaking outside a mosque in Istanbul, said. "...This approach of 13 demands is against international law because you cannot attack or intervene in the sovereignty of a country."

Bahrain's foreign minister said on Sunday that outside interference would not solve the problem.

"It is in the interest of these powers to respect the existing regional order which is capable of solving any issue that may arise," Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed al-Khalifa said in a message on Twitter, without naming Turkey.

I don't know which world he is living in, but it's certainly not in this world.

In this world, the powerful dominate the weak. International laws (which are voluntary by nature) are completely and utterly ignored by most major and even middle powers.

guardian is providing fodder for Saudi haters type, because they themselves are Saudi hater.

May I know, who threatened Qatar of invasion?

Qatar is suffering for his wrong doings, which includes a fake letter in Pakistani courts.

What Qatar and US knows, Saudi and UAE knows too. Name of the game. But, US is not willing to let side to blame Qatari of all terrorism charge and let other walk away clean. Which people fail to understand , looking this turmoil with there own agenda.
Qatari in other words says , we been used and abused and now get blame of terrorism in the region, from Taliban to Palastine.

No one has threatened Qatar.. that came as a response to a possible Egyptian-Saudi military base in Bahrain, which they have perceived as a threat.. but it is just some selfish thinking, because Bahrain is also a tiny Island and feels threatened by the Turkish presence in Qatar..

Qatar does not face any external military threat situation, The Turkish presence is to insure the internal security of Qatar's ruling family and prevent any uprising from the people.. Qatar might also be scared of the US presence(more than 10 000 troops on its ground..
But the real threat facing Qatar is an economics one! I do not think Turkey can help much in that

But they can't really say that.

Weak nations say the world is governed by international law so they may have some hope of getting what they want.

The powerful say the same, but keep it as a charade while they follow the law of the jungle.
