After Jammu and Kashmir’s police chief, a senior Army commander based in Srinagar has said that it (Army) and other Indian security forces are ready to take on al Qaeda if it chooses to turn to the state.
“We’re prepared to take on any challenge, said Lt. Gen. Gurmeet Singh, the commander of Army’s 15 (Chinar) Corps at a press conference in Srinagar on Sunday when asked about the possibility of Al-Qaeda setting up a base in the Valley. “They will only regret,” he added.
His optimism is rooted in the military capability of Army and other security forces, excellent intelligence network and good synergy with Jammu and Kashmir police and other security forces agencies to deal with such challenge and, above all, cooperation and help they receive from the people of the state.
Earlier, J&K police chief K. Rajendra Kumar had said that the Army and other security forces including paramilitary forces and police were fully alive to the situation in the wake of al Qaeda threats, post-United States pull out from Afghanistan and were maintaining high alert on the borders in the entire state.
Top Al Qaeda militants had recently purportedly released a video calling on Muslims of Kashmir to “join jihad”. Lt. Gen. Singh endorsed Mr Kumar’s assertion that situation along the LoC and the hinterland in J&K is “under control”.
