Well, we all know Chinese are very pragmatic. Chinese maritime is risky and mallaccca strait is a famous choke point...
So gwadar port thru Pakistan and to EMEA, through hurmuz and then to suez is possible thru pakistan only.
I have lots of respect for how China progressed....trend may go for may be three more decades and then China will also hit by the bug of imperial hubris...and end will be catastrophic.

We just can't be limited to a war scenario. There could be anything that can jeopardize shipping through malacca strait, accidents, natural disaster, and of course during a larger conflict.
Gwadar when fully functional shall be of immense economical value for Chinese imports/exports doesn't matter war or peace.
Gwadar is Pakistani waters and even during a conflict US won't block it unless Pakistan is involved. So Gwadar is a safe bet for China.
