Putin visit: India may sign for 29 MiG-29K fighters

BY : IANS

India is likely to ink a deal to purchase an additional 29 MiG-29K fighter jets, valued close to $1.12 billion, from Russia during the visit of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in March.

The deal will be signed along with two other major defence contracts – for the joint development of fifth generation aircraft and multi role transport aircraft.

‘The deal will be inked during Prime Minister Putin’s visit. The decision will be formally announced a few days before the visit,’ a senior Russian official said here. The visit by Putin, a former president, will be his first to India after becoming prime minister.

Talks are also expected on the final price of Russian-built aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov. The price has been finalised and is awaiting the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Security.

The two contracts – for Gorshkov and additional MiG-29Ks – will further consolidate Russia’s position as the largest defence supplier to India, having notched up defence sales worth over $35 billion since the 1960s.

The MiG-29K is a modernized naval variant of the MiG-29 operational with the Indian Air Force (IAF). The MiG-29K operates from aircraft carriers.

The Indian Navy is keen to replace its fleet of Sea Harrier aircraft. The new fighter jets will operate from the indigenous aircraft carrier being built at Cochin Shipyard. They will be armed with air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles.

India has already contracted for 16 MiG-29K combat jets which will be deployed on-board Gorshkov, to be commissioned in the Indian Navy as INS Vikramaditya. The first four of the 16 aircraft have been delivered to India and will be formally inducted on Feb 19 in Goa.

The jets were purchased by the Indian Navy as part of a $1.5 billion deal signed with Russia in January 2004 for Admiral Gorshkov. Of this, $740 million was meant for the aircraft and the balance for refitting the carrier.

The Russians have now upped the price for Gorshkov to between $2.2 billion and $2.9 billion and negotiations on the price are currently underway.

The navy will eventually be getting 12 MiG-29K single-seater aircraft and four MiG-29KUB twin-seat trainer aircraft, some in flyaway condition. The trainer version is similar to the single-seater but with a slightly reduced operational range.

The navy’s MiG-29Ks have arrester gear and stronger landing gear for carrier landings, folding wings and rust-proofing to prevent corrosion from salt water, its manufacturer says on its website.

The aircraft features a fully digitised glass cockpit, improved engine protection against ingestion of foreign particles like birds, a multi-mode radar and increased range. The contract ensures that the navy gets the entire spectrum of services, including a full mission simulator.

The MiG-29K will provide aerial cover to the carrier’s battle group, acquire air superiority and destroy sea-borne and ground-based targets with guided high-precision weapons during the day and at night and in any weather condition, an official of the Indian Navy said.

The aircraft, the first bought by the navy after the Sea Harriers, will also be capable of playing the role of midair refueller.

I was hoping for some news on the proposed 50 additional mki's that some reports had claimed last year as being asked for by the air force. It was said that the deal is likely to be signed this year. I hope MOD orders more flankers! Anyhow, though this deal was in the pipeline for sometime now, I would say it is good news for IN indeed! 45 mig-29k's is a very good number!

Could depend on other circumstances too. Which MMRCA will be chosen and how fast it can be inducted, how many additional will be procured andnot to forget the 50 optional LCA MK2 that are likely.
Also how many Mig 27, Jags, or if the Mirage 2000 will be upgraded or not.
All points that could decide if another fast procurement of MKI is necessary or not.
Imo more MMRCAs especially if we go for Rafale would be better, because higher numbers reduces the total costs, the MMRCAs are cheaper in terms of operational costs and especially with AWACS all around us now, low RCS fighters should be prefered.

Btw, lets hope that the carriers will come in the expected time frame, otherwise those Mig 29Ks won't be useful at all.

This is for sure. In the MMRCA competition either the ameicans or eurpeans will get 126 planes and the other 200-126=74 planes . Fifty su-30mki(upgraded) are also going to be ordered simultaneously from russia and the time taken is not going to be more than 7 months from now

.
well i think the mmrca order should be in two plane f18 and rafale as rafale and we cna take 50 su 30mki planes for russia and 29 mig29

.
MOD sure has a love for odd figures...
126 MRCAs, 29 migs..
May be some one is using a broken calculator in there!!

29 mig 29-k are a seperate thing altogether. The upgraded Su 30mki is tied to the mmrca deal.

as far as i think, MoD doesn't want to disappoint russians, if they dont go for mig 35, so mig 29s and pak fa will surly compensate this deal. Finally they want russians for their advance defensive power.

I was under the impression that mki deal was pushed by IAF last year (50 jets) as HAL is still trying to ramp up production without much success. It would seem that the earlier figure (optimistic) of all 140 licensed crafts by 2014 would be impossible due to low production rate at HAL which I am inclined to believe seeing IAF orbat (2017/2018 more likely). I hope they sign for additional mki's asap since mmrca even if signed today will take years for induction (atleast 3-4 years for 1 squadron) with minial added capabilities over the mki's. mki's if ordered today will get delivered in 4 years (all 50)...... my 2 cents!

The article says that a formal PAKFA deal is also on the agenda. Though I am sure that the program (participation) will be fluid in nature and any deal signed will be to satisfy the two sides! But I am quite certain that we will see HAL officials going for extended periods to sukhoi okb and working on the project from sometime this year!
