I know about that but it is only one side of the story. A high ranking Russian military team had a meeting with Turkey's foreign minister about a month ago. They were there to apologize for the intrusions, clear the air and also address any future misunderstandings.Turkey summoned the Russian ambassador to discuss the incursion Tuesday. The ambassador was summoned twice in October after Russian fighter planes breached Turkish airspace. At the time, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Turkish pilots had been instructed to intercept any Russian aircraft that enters Turkey.
The ambassador, Andrei Karlov, was summoned again Friday to protest Russian bombing of Turkmen villages in northern Syria close to the Turkish border. The ambassador was told that ongoing attacks on the villages "could lead to serious consequences," the foreign ministry said.
Diplomacy had been tried, sadly failed and a Russian pilot has paid with his life for the bravado of Putin and Erdogan.

Russian foreign minster had also apologized in answer to Turkey's objections for the intrusions.
It is not like Russia acting as a bully and not minding the objections. Many of the terrorists are stationed very close to the Turkey's border for good reasons. There is always the possibility that one of the jets might violate Turkey's air space for a few seconds. Shooting it down, while the other side thought it had cleared the issue a month before is irrational at best.
I don't see what Turkey was trying to achieve from this action. Protecting its territory is not a good excuse as nobody wanted to violate it to begin with. Safeguarding another group inside another country doesn't again is not a legal ground for this action either.
