Putin says Russian city Volgograd may become Stalingrad again

Russian President Vladimir Putin does not rule out the possibility of returning the name of Stalingrad to the Russian city of Volgograd located on the Volga River Stalingrad was the epicenter of the most grandiose battle of World War II and was almost completely destroyed by the unparalleled intensity of fighting between Soviet and Nazi troops.

Answering a question of a WWII veteran, Putin said that "in line with our legislation the issue can be settled by the regional and municipal authorities."

"In this case residents should hold a referendum where they will decide on it (the change of the name)," Putin said.

"We’ll do as the residents say," the president said, TASS reports.

He recalled that in Paris there is a square named Stalingrad and other cities in Europe keep this name in memory.

"It wasn’t me who changed the name," Putin said as a joke adding seriously that "we’ll mull over how it can be done" [the referendum].

This is absolutely right decision. Stalingrad - a symbol of courage and fortitude, memory obout victory in the greatest battle of all time. The city should carry this name.

The battle where the greatest war machine to ever come out of Europe (Nazi Wehrmacht) was defeated by the Russians.

It seems a shame to call the city Volgograd instead of Stalingrad.

If not the Russians were no match for the Nazis, Just like the Chinese were no match for the Japanese during that period, but still Japan couldnt fully invade/control the whole of China and got bocked down/suffered heavy losses without any strategic gain, the germans committed the same mistake against Russia and suffered a similar fate with no strategic gain which ultimtaley led to their defeat since they were fighting on two fronts against the U.S.S.R and the allies.

Stalin may have killed more, but without him and the sacrifice of the soviets, there would not be any jews, Slavic, romani and other "undesirable" races left in the world.

Stalin may have been a bad person, but without his iron fist soviets would not have defeated the germans.

nonsense. As per NKVD archives,Stalin was responsible for 800,000 deaths not the gibberish west spews. My uncles lost their own parents in the civil war and they were fighting against bolsheviks under Deinkin white forces. 400,000 cossacks were killed by Bolsheviks under Lenin/Trotsky.

Yes, Stalin killed more Russian than Hitler did. But can you imagine if Hitler defeat Stalin and takeover Russia. Do you think Hitler is going to be nice to the Slava race? Stalin denied Hitler the chance to kill more Russian, that is the point.

hmm...a quick search in wikipedia, and this is what it has to say-

In 1961, Nikita Khrushchev's administration changed the name of the city to Volgograd ("Volga City") as part of his programme of de-Stalinization following Stalin's death, as he was trying to reduce the "cult of personality". This action was and remains somewhat controversial, given Stalingrad's importance as a symbol of resistance during the war. During Konstantin Chernenko's brief administration in 1985, proposals were floated to revive its historic name. There remains a strong degree of local support for a reversion but intermittent proposals have yet to be accepted by the Russian government.

Apparently, Khruschev changed the name of the city.Incidentally, he is the same person who played a major role in Battle for Stalingrad.
