'poor' economies can't sustain military campaigns, what Putin might be going for is a war economy

makes sense on many levels, it generates employment and invigorates industry at home, and he gets to showcase weapons to the world, restore Russian glory.

Say what you want about him but he's not a dumb person like Bush, all his moves are calculated.

Russians had excellent win to loss ratio in Afghanistan. It was that traitor Gorbachev who withdrew from Afghanistan. Putin is no Gorbachev. Putin is the new tsar.

• unending cannon fodder forces to throw at the jihadists
• skepticism and lack of will from the US to support 'rebels' in their jihad against Assad
  
• overwhelming Russian air power
• no defences for jihadists

Russia will clean house and they'll be wiped out, also, next US president will most likely be a Republican and none of the front-runners are in favor of supporting these so called rebels. So you have to wonder how much Saudia/Turkey can do, and how much they'll be allowed to do under the next US administration.

Soviet union was going under a lean phase just like pakistan or india have gone through. Instead of buckling up and moving ahead he fell flat due to charms of west.
