If Assad was so unpopular, he could not have stayedin power on his own until 2015 and until now with support of Russia. The same model of regime change was applied on Syria like the one on Libya but it has failed.
The mass destruction is not because of Assad but because of the zeal to change regimes in Middle East to give security zone to Israel for its expansionist and predatory policies.

Now tell me what chance had rebels in 2011? - Zero. Nevertheless they managed to take over of 2/3 of Syria by 2013 because Assad was supported only by Alawi minority. And then Assad called swarms of Shia mercenaries to save him + ISIS buddies. When it was not enough he called Russians.
