Pushing India into NSG at Pakistan’s expense counterproductive

Not even sure why Pakistan and India are linked in this regard. Both are completely different stories.

The House is merely going through its normal process of consultation before it makes its own recommendations on policy. Such testimonies express all sides of an issue and are never the final decision. That happens much later in the process of formulating such policies.

yes but for what , nuclear power not for making bombs. Can you tell me the share of nuke power in pakistan or nuclear power plants it has? pakistan sole interest is to advance its weapon program unlike India which is inking deals for nuke reactors for power. Let pakistan ink similar deals with western powers for reactors then they will let it into NSG.

ditto holds good for pakistan too, with pakistan coming under china's influence they can do a la north korea.

well you provided the answer urself.
knowing very well that India will refuse citing china , so the proposal is non-starter to begin with whatever the merits be.

partially true, we had reactor even before that. It was nehru's whose beliefs in non violence stopped India from developing the nuke . India had TIFR (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tata_Institute_of_Fundamental_Research) even before Independence by 1947 , India was already in nuke research. To say that it was possible only with western help is half truth.

India's and Asia's first nuclear reactor was the Apsara research reactor. Designed and built in India, with assistance and fuel from the United Kingdom, Apsara reached criticality on August 4, 1956 and was inaugurated on January 20, 1957.[10][11] A further research nuclear reactor and its first nuclear power plant were built with assistance from Canada.[12][13] The 40 MW research reactor agreement was signed in 1956, and CIRUS achieved first criticality in 1960. This reactor was supplied to India on the assurance that it would not be used for military purposes, but without effective safeguards against such use.[12][13]

lol, India is the not first nuke country but well be last country to dismantle its nukes. Even if India forgoes nuke pakistan will never do, thats a known fact.

Dude, I just said like 3 posts ago that nuclear tech and fuel have to be categorized and open to IAEA inspections....

I appreciate the Nuclear history thanks.

But this conversation can't be had when you're willing to just over look India's own history.

But an India-Pakistan disarmament can serve as a blueprint for the world. Neither-side is going to give up it's nukes without a peace agreement.

India and Pakistan will hold a plebiscite in the respective territory they hold and will win the plebiscite on which territory wants to go where. And there goes your reason to have a di<k measuring contest...

Both sides will agree to discontinue their proxy wars, and the dominoes will fall from there....

There are plenty of countries that don't have nuclear weapons confront those that do. A India-Pakistan peace agreement will force China to rethink their relationship with India. Such a I-P agreement will and can hold an internationally commitment to keep nuclear weapons out of the S. Asia sphere.

You do realize that $billions are being spent to maintain nuclear weapons over a few square km of barren land?

While Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is a prestigious think tank and US Administration and Congress take their opinion seriously, the US policies are defined solely to serve US interests. Indians, due to their hallow mentality, might be bragging for the US pats they are getting on their back, US simply cannot write-off Pakistan much to the chagrin of Indians. The recent US policies have been blindly based on deep US desire for containing Chinese. It is good that different US quarters have finally started having a touch with sanity. As for Indian acceptance into the NSG fold, the grapes are still sour for them. It is almost impossible for India to get the NSG membership in foreseeable future. It's not just the Chinese who want to keep Indians out. A dozen or so countries, including Turkey, New Zealand, Austria, Russia, etc. are unwilling to accept Indians in that forum. Indian, as their nature compels them, have already renegaded upon their promises made a few years ago. One crucial requirement was the separation of military and civilian nuclear facilities and then opening up of the civilian ones to the international community. Indians are trying to cheat the civilized world. And opposing countries are unwilling to get blindfolded by the US animosity towards China.
Is first bold part only specific to US? if not then your second bold part shows some hollowness on your part..no?? Thirdly when US got us a waiver in 2006 did they write off Pakistan then or not?? If not then NSG waiver will also not equivalent to writing off..if yes then they have already done that in the past so what's new here...

Fourth bold part is true...we still have some hurdles to cross...Your dozen or so list if figment of imagination....and especially adding Russia in that list is laughable...Unless and until i have missed something big here...so please do enlighten me there...

well there is some thing called dual use technologies and countries can choose which reactors can be beyond purview of IAEA. As such bomb building activity can still be carried out in covert manner using newly acquired technology.

well lets talk realpolitik , to assume kashmir is only bone of contention is not correct & there is no question of peace between two given that enough blood has been shed. The very reason plebiscite was not held is bcos pakistan did not vacate kashmir . Now you expect India to trust pakistan and disarm ? thats way too farfetched.

Lets forget about nukes, is pakistan willing to let go its so called non-state actors?

Irrespective of watever argument we have , pakistan getting into NSG right now is pretty hard. This is a organization dominated by western countries and they will need some thing in return. India will open its market to western nuke reactors, only pakistan has to decide what it will give in return for the favor.

Do you know why NSG was established ? lol

to slow down the Indian nuclear program

india has unofficial compliance with FMCT and nuclear exports
pakistan has to decide where they want to make concessions

but they are of no use to western countries right now. If pakistan says we will provide nuke tech to other countries, they will say go ahead we will deal with it. International community is only afraid of nuke falling into hands of terrorists. Pakistan has to offer some thing western countries want like roll back or join the western camp.

You are grossly mistaken if you think our nuclear weapons are intended or preserved because of Pakistan.

Or that Pakistan giving up nuclear weapons would mean India is comfortable in giving them up too. Or that an Indian-Pakistan disarmament treaty is in any way a possibility because our weapons are for Pakistan.

Our nuclear weapons will not be discarded till China and US discard nuclear weapons. Our mandarins have made that clear enough.

India will enter NSG by end of 2016. This case became stronger after India refused to ratify Paris climate agreement during the G-20 summit to defy credits going to China, the host nation. This has struck a nerve in Beijing. What's more interesting ? India was joined by Turkey, which raised questions earlier on India's NSG entry. India has got a leverage now, 'give us NSG membership then we will ratify climate deal'. India should also benefit for everything cannot be one sided.
Hope China has learned the lesson of blindly opposing India.

How did this rural/forest dacoit manage to get such high technology gun like this? I am astonished. Is this a scene from some movie?

There is a clear divide on the Indian NSG membership inclusion. What seemed like a matter of days has now become a pain in the butt. The Obama administration is hurt and red faced. Despite their frantic efforts to include India into the fold , things haven't gone so smoothly. It has also laid bare the divide among the nations of the world. The analysts are more reserved and cautious because they understand the consequences of including countries on political motives. The article clearly outlines the differences. The consequences are indeed very grave if India is included without proper merit and justification. Worse, such sensitive treaties can be tossed into the bin if nations are going to be selected on the basis of political motives. The US accuses other nations of picking and choosing. Yet, here it is guilty of the same crime.
Strongly agree with you Sir.
