Purchase of Artillery Guns from BAE Systems INC

The case for procurement of artillery guns through Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route from US Government has not progressed due to cost issues and the vendor’s (M/s BAE System) proposal not being fully compliant to the offset requirements. All capital procurements are carried out as per the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) which contains stringent provisions aimed at ensuring the highest degree of probity, public accountability and transparency.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar in a written reply to Shri Salim Ansari in Rajya Sabha today.

. . . .
Just induct more of the Bofors guns. Forget past scandals, the Bofors delivered for India when it mattered the most.

Bofors is BAE Systems now, but these are specialized light weight howitzers.

Just buy the Bofors. Before the scandal hit India was supposed to field 1500 of the Bofors guns but only 400 could be inducted. If only the scandal leaked out after all the guns were purchased.

China is becoming aggressive, slowly but VERY surely.

This is a key acquisition which quite simply can not be late.

If we have a border skirmish like kargil with China, these guns in enough numbers along with an ultra light well trained in that terrain infantry will stop the Chinese assault.
China has far more Artillery and MRL and helicopters to wipe out your systems

The fact of the matter is chinese are not as foolish as our western neighbors, Chinese know what a war with nuclear armed neighbors can lead too....
But does the mullah influenced army to the west of us realize this....

Yes but when you have so much power you end up using that.

Yeah yeah and how many of them are mountain artillery may I ask??Their principle mountain artillery is still a variant of D 30 howitzers which has even lesser range compared to our old 105mm IFGs!!and Indian guns are placed on the reverse slopes of the Himalayan mountains where as the Chinese are over a feature less plateau!!So good luck wiping out our systems.

Yeah yeah, like I haven't heard those already!!Before calling others kids, you would be better advised to try to see the bigger picture. What good self propelled artillery would be in a mountainous region!!Sure they can be operated in the TAR,but then what??How you gonna move them forward, can they leap over mountains??Listen bro, there are only a few narrow passes that can support such vehicles, and I hope you do know the inherent dangers of trying to move such vehicles through such passes!!Because if the lead vehicle is taken out, which in any case wouldn't be much difficult since they have light armor plating, the whole convey will get bogged down and then you are in a world of hurt. You sure wouldn't want that to happen to your comrades, would you!!

And then coming to the light tanks, the same rule applies as for the SPGs.Besides, you really think a light tank with liuttle armor protection can withstand MBTs like upgraded T 72M1s with??!!There are plenty of those MBTs deployed there, not to launch an offensive into TAR but as a blocking force against any possible PLA thrust. If you do not believe me,then please come visit Sikkim and ArunachalPradesh and see for yourself what I'm talking about.Only then you can understand the terrain situation and how difficult it is move such SPGs and light tanks.Sure there are some places which can be utilised by such vehicles, but driving tanks and other vehicles through such narrow passes and valleys is extremely dangerous, ask the Soviets. You do know what happened to their tanks in Afghanistan, and they were fighting a bunch of rag tag militia men, armed with RPG 7s!!And they still had brought MBTs to fight the guerrillas, not light tanks!!

Oh,and I almost forgot!!Even if they have more weapons, they also have bigger enemies and far longer borders to manage to!!They have to cater for the vast northern and eastern frontiers after all!!Granted, they will still have significant numerical superiority in terms of artillery assets over the Indian Army along the LAC,but how they gonna overcome their disadvantage of terrain situation??You didn't answer my earlier question - how they gonna target our artillery positions which are placed on the reverse slopes and also protect theirs from ours since they are on a feature less plateau??!!Do take that into your consideration.
