LAHORE: Under its pro-poor initiative the Punjab government has provided Rs 10 billion subsidy on wheat, 3.5 billion on transportation and Rs 10.8 billion for provision of free medicines to poor patients in the annual budget 2015-16, said provincial minister for excise and taxation Mujtuba Shujaur Rehman.

He said that the government has established the Punjab Social Protection Authority, which is launching its first project of Rs 2 billion for the rehabilitation of disabled persons by issuing them monthly stipneds and helping start their own small businesses to make them self-reliant. Mujtuba said under the self-employment scheme, the provincial government is providing Rs 2 billion to Akhuwat for provision of interest-free loans.

“Rs 2 billion health insurance scheme was being launched and the government was constructing Rs 26 billion child protection institutes for the street children. In the first phase institutes are being constructed in Bahawalpur and Sahiwal,” he said.

A project to construct women protection houses in Multan, Lodharan, Kasur, Layyah, Hafizabad and Shaikhupura was in the offing.
