Punjab Slashes Education Budget for 9th Consecutive Year

I agree. And everyday I hear news of the corruption and ineptness of the current government. Kind of makes you feel hopeless and helpless. We are idiots for voting in the sharif's and bhutto's over and over again. It is very unfortunate the way Pakistani people vote and the poor choice of political parties we have.

Not unfortunate at all. Just look at the state of their lives, they are miserable and trapped in poverty. I honestly have stopped feeling bad for them, and even stopped helping them. If they don't want to help themselves, why should i waste my money on them.

If people believe that decreasing (in % of Total Budget Outlay) the education budget for Punjab is justified from both micro and macro level perspectives and how Pakistan overall is faring - Punjab being 55% of Pakistan where 60% of schools lack basic facilities then I rest my case.

Indeed it is a very sad state but if Rulers focus on Education how would they prolong their tyrannical rule which is worse than Kingdom yet people call it Democracy.

I just added Nepal also in the comparison so PMLN supporters get the overall picture of the region.

I recall a conversation my grandfather used to narrate with an old friend of his who happened to be Governor of Punjab - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushtaq_Ahmed_Gurmani when my grandfather asked the then Governor why he has no road to his village - he said

"Am I a fool?!? That I allow road to be built to my village and open the roads for uneducated to seek education and challenge my rule - I will NEVER allow that"

Same thinking prevails in current leadership of Punjab which unfortunately is also the leadership of Pakistan - as we discuss a 60 year old quote of Ex Governor - and it's still relative today in 2016.

Older data as I do not have latest OOSC figures; if someone have it; then may add to this table:

I hope some members do not get super confused re Percentage and Absolute Numbers - Again :)

You think the average kid only spends 8 years in schools because of our education system? You don't think the cultural norms play a significant part in whether the parents keep their kids in school or not? Lower class citizens could care less about education. They want their kids to be on the street making money and supporting the family.

You are also negating the fact that public schools haven't seen the growth experienced by private schools. There are most private schools today than ever before and the trend continues to be in their favor.

Lastly, stop picking on Punjab as if this is a problem in only part of the country. This is nationwide problem and everyone is to blame including your beloved fearless cricketer turned politician.

Secular and religious education really needs to be separated. In both India and Pakistan, this is a major problem.

There are some members who have iron man fallacy ingrained all over their thought process and it is encircled by a halo with following constituent analogies:

  1. If someone critiques Sharif’s it has to be from PTI

  2. If no substantive response can be given; then divert the topic

  3. If everything fails; then start personal attacks
This mentality is reflected in their leadership of Talal Chaudhry, Abid Sher Ali, Pervez Rashid, Danyal Aziz, Rana Sanullah, Mian Mannan, who one can see as face of PMLN as they are present in 95% of TV programs and debates and no wonder it trickles down to their supporters who have tri-directional job objectives:

Now coming back to topic of richest province of Pakistan and it’s “hate affair” with Education– Punjab which ironically is 55% of Pakistan (population wise) and the same family that ruled it for 30 odd years has been at the helm of affairs of Pakistan for more than 3 years now; and if their performance in Punjab re focus on education sector is anything to go then being behind Bhutan and Nepal should not hurt us as the fact of the matter is:

Punjab Govt., has been decreasing the Education Budget for 9 Consecutive Years. Period!

Incorrect.

Punjab Govt., has been decreasing the Education Budget for 9 Consecutive Years, as a percentage of the overall budget for Punjab. The budget for education from a rupee perspective has increased year over year.

See the difference? I'm sure you don't.

You are saying that the population has not risen simultaneously? For example there is 5 million Rupees to provide for 1000 primary age students. Then there is 5 million rupees to provide for 2000 primary age students. This is the difference. The education budget percentage should reflect the population of students. A lower percentage will harm those students and fewer will be able to receive an education.

.
Sad! Education should be allocated the most funds in every budget. A more educated and skilled population will bring in more investment and prosperity in Pak than any CPEC type agreement.

.
Just an addendum for the discussion around Priorities & Direction - Trophy Projects in an Underdeveloped Country will keep the country in an underdeveloped state - longer and will also cause more pain to the have-nots which is in majority.

Another example of how Parha Likha Punjab is contributing towards Parha Likha Pakistan is self explanatory - those who are fixated over absolute numbers please ignore the below table as it shows the decline in ECE Gross Enrollment Rate trend in 2012-13 period by negative 9% in Punjab which overall had impact on Pakistan with negative 4.1% from 2009-10.

I am not saying anything to that effect I am merely stating the actual facts when it comes to the movement of the total budget and how it should be articulated without any bias.

Of course the population has risen, of course there are more kids today. But there are also more private schools today.

I tried looking up what the education budget was in Punjab nine years ago on an actual amount basis and couldn't find it. I'm sure it was significantly lower compared to what it is today. Again, on an actual amount basis as opposed to percentages which are very easy to manipulate.
