Punjab put on high alert

LAHORE - Police security yesterday was heightened in the Punjab province following the reported killing of Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour in a US drone strike, as authorities fear reprisal attacks inside the country.
An official told The Nation that security was beefed up in the big cities of the province as media reports confirmed the death of Mullah Mansour, chief of the Afghan Taliban. The provincial govt yesterday directed the district administration to intensify security around govt installations, religious places, and other important buildings especially educational institutions.
In Lahore, the police stepped up snap-checking at all the entry and exit points of the metropolis where policemen were seen searching luggage of passengers in public transport.
The official, who preferred his name not be mentioned, said that the security was intensified keeping in view the developments taking place in the militancy-hit region bordering war-torn Afghanistan.
The high-ranking official told this reporter that senior govt officers and popular politicians are requested to restrict their movement.
“The very important persons are asked to follow the security guidelines and avoid unnecessary travelling,” the official said.
When asked about the nature of the security threats, the official said, “There is no specific intelligence or security threat. But, the law-enforcement agencies are put on high alert to avoid any untoward happening.”
All the Regional Police Officers and District Police Officers are directed to ensure strict security measures to keep a check on the movement of suspected elements.
According to an official of the provincial Home Department, the police are directed to ensure snap-checking at all the checkpoints set up on the national highways and motorways.
Similarly, the police will check every vehicle and luggage of the passengers at the riverine posts bordering other province.
Earlier, the field police officers were directed to conduct mock-exercises to review the preparedness of Quick Response Force. The QRF officers asked to ensure befitting response “within five to seven minutes” in case any untoward happening or suspicious movement.
The Lahore police were also directed to set up surprise pickets to intercept the movement of suspected elements. A police spokesman last night said that the City police were conducting massive security sweep in different parts of the provincial metropolis.
He said the police deployment would also be intensified around all the educational institutions in Lahore on Monday.
He said that additional police force had already been deployed at the entry and exit points to check every vehicle and each person.
On the other hand, the provincial government is planning to close down all the schools at least one week before the scheduled summer vacations in the province.
Ahead of the holy month of Ramazan, the govt was taking unprecedented security steps to maintain law and order with massive deployment of security personnel across the Punjab province.
In addition to 135,000 strong provincial police, the paramilitary troops and Elite police commandoes would remain on standby to meet any untoward happening.
Also, the provincial police are ordered to take strict action against those found involved in display of arms, weapons, or aerial firing. Temporary security guards will be provided to those personalities who are facing serious security threats, a police official said.
