Karachi's next mayor is set to run city via "video link" from behind bars. AN EXPRESS NEWS SCREENGRAB

KARACHI: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz deputy mayor candidate Amanullah Afridi disrupted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Imran Ismail’s press conference after he cast his vote for Karachi mayor.

As Ismail addressed the media, Afridi pushed him and took over the podium. Watch the video here:

Elections for reserved seats of mayor and deputy mayor, as well as for the office of chairman and vice chairman of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), along with other municipalities of Sindh began on Wednesday.

Polling started at 9am and will run until 5pm. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Farooq Sattar on Tuesday urged all MQM local bodies’ representatives to converge at Ghanchi Hall in PIB Colony to take part in the mayoral elections.

Karachi’s next mayor to run city via “video link” from behind bars

The imprisoned politician who is almost certain to be the next mayor of Pakistan’s largest and richest city of Karachi will run the teeming metropolis via “video link” from his prison cell, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

Karachi set to be run by imprisoned mayor

Akhtar, who was arrested last month on suspicion of aiding alleged militants, arrived in an armoured police vehicle at the British era Karachi Metropolitan Corporation building to cast his vote in the final round of elections that has his party in an unassailable lead.

Akhtar is a member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), which swept local elections in December, but he could not take office because of legal challenges that prevented members of the city council from casting their vote. MQM controls the council.

“He will open an office in jail and via video link he will conduct council sessions,” Mahfooz Yar Khan, Akhtar’s lawyer, told reporters outside the council building as his client voted inside. “He can run Karachi via video link for five years.”

The election of an imprisoned politician as mayor is symbolic of the ongoing power struggle for control of Karachi, a port city that is home to 20 million people, the stock exchange, central bank, as well as militants and gangsters. Akhtar’s secular MQM has dominated politics and commerce in the city for decades, but a paramilitary crackdown on crime since 2013 has undermined its power base.

Waseem Akhtar, three other politicians arrested on terror facilitation charges

On Tuesday, police lodged a case of treason against MQM’s firebrand London-based leader, Altaf Hussain, and sealed the party’s headquarters after Hussain had incited supporters to attack the office of a TV channel in clashes that left one dead.

How Akhtar will manage to run the city is far from clear, with the courts not expected to release him before he likely takes oath on August 30. MQM officials have said they will ask authorities to provide him with a well furnished office. Police will escort him to any meetings he is allowed to attend on the outside.

Security forces have arrested scores of MQM members in the last year and accuse them of torture, murder and racketeering in a bid to keep their grip on the city. MQM denies any link to crime and accuses paramilitary forces of a series of extra-judicial killings of its members.

Akhtar was arrested on July 19 on suspicion of sheltering and providing medical treatment to alleged militants and criminals. He also faces earlier charges of inciting riots.

Faisal Raza Abdi really?
How can he join mqm wasnt he against all political parties?

To fast track panama issues pti has to shake hands with parties that they dont see eye to eye with

Yes i am aware of it there are two pti groups in Karachi one wants close alliance with mqm and other is against it like Faisal Wadia but i personally think we should wait a little mqm is about to break before making any alliance we should first let the party break apart first into pro and anti altaf groups and make alliance with anti Altaf group headed by Farooq Sattar

Pti has an mna from Karachi and you are saying they have no ground :-\\
Pti is perhaps the only party that is polular among all ethnicities in Karachi the problem is they need to make 30% support into 60-70% by correct policies

Mark my words Alvi ( PTI ) going to lose that Clifton seat in coming election, there is a lot change come after previous elections PTI popularity Graf down over all with foolishness of IK and Clifton seat is no one permenant form past, JI won there PPP won there MQM won there now PTI, the vote PTI get in previous election they lose that bank vote already as in Baldiati elections they fail to secure seats few they got get form Sohrab Goth Afghan Basti and interior malir area near steel mil around all above areas dominated by pakhtoons and Punjabis easy to figure out for what I mean.
Faisl Raza Abdi is poplar among mqm minus AH group and he himself want to go back in Parliment but not with PPP ticket he can't win independently MQM might be other option him as well.
