PTI govt to open commercial section at Pakistan embassy in Ethiopi
Move aimed at developing linkages between businesses of two countries

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Commerce is opening a commercial section in Pakistan’s embassy in Addis Ababa this year to develop linkages between the businesses of the two countries, said Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Textiles Abdul Razak Dawood.

Welcoming a delegation from Ethiopia, led by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Markos Tekle, and State Minister for Trade and Industry Misiganu Arega, he elaborated the ‘Look Africa Policy Initiative’ of the commerce ministry, which was aimed at enhancing engagement and trade and investment relations with Africa.

Appreciating the relations between the two countries, Dawood expressed the desire to commensurate trade relations with political relations.

Areas of mutual cooperation were highlighted by both sides.

The adviser detailed export potential of Pakistan in multiple sectors including engineering goods, sugar, rice, agro-processed products, surgical, pharmaceutical and sports goods.

Dawood explained that Pakistan desired to make Ethiopia a hub for enhancing exports to Africa under ‘Look Africa Policy Initiative’ which was appreciated by the Ethiopian side.

Ethiopian foreign minister welcomed ‘Look Africa Policy Initiative’ and assured support for the newly opened office. He also announced that the country was planning to open its embassy in Islamabad soon.
The Ethiopian ministers reiterated the desire to upgrade political, trade, commercial and people-to-people contacts.

Ethiopian minister of trade expressed interest in exporting pulses, black tea, high-quality sesame seed and oilseeds to Pakistan.

He also informed that the country was working for the commencement of Ethiopian air flights to and from Karachi and expressed interest in hiring technical experts from Pakistan in fields of engineering, pharmaceutical, and IT sectors.

Both sides emphasised the need to translate brotherly relations into meaningful economic and trade cooperation.

The two nations also expressed interest in frequent engagements at government-to-government and business-to-business level coupled with activities for promoting trade.

Both sides agreed on removing impediments in the area of technical regulations, visa facilitation and finalisation of a memorandum of understanding on trade relations and treaty for the avoidance of double taxation.

ISLAMABAD: A high-power delegation from Ethiopia, led by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Markos Tekle and State Minister for Trade and Industry Misiganu Arega, met Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood in Islamabad on Thursday.

The adviser appreciated the warm, historic and brotherly relations between the two countries and expressed his desire to make the trade relations commensurate with the political relations.

The Ethiopian delegation, which also comprised of leading businessmen and traders, referred to the meeting held between the prime ministers of both countries on the sidelines of the 2nd Belt and Road Forum in April this year and reiterated the desire to upgrade political, trade, commercial and people-to-people contacts.

The adviser warmly reciprocated the sentiments of the Ethiopian side and stressed the need to boost bilateral trade volume.

Dawood highlighted the export potential of Pakistan in various sectors, including engineering goods, sugar, rice, agro-processed products, surgical, pharmaceutical and sports goods.

“Under the ministry’s ‘Look Africa’ Policy, Pakistan desires to make Ethiopia, being a member of COMESA –headquarter of African Union and African Continental FTA – a hub of its exports to Africa,” the adviser stated.

He further informed the delegation that his ministry will soon open a commercial section in Pakistan’s Embassy in Addis Ababa so as to develop linkages between the businesses of the two countries.

Speaking on the occasion, the Ethiopian foreign minister welcomed the initiative and assured of complete support for the opening of the new office. He also announced that his country will soon open its embassy in Islamabad.

The Ethiopian trade minister expressed keen interest in exporting pulses, black tea, high-quality sesame seed and oilseeds to Pakistan.

He informed that his ministry is working on the commencement of Ethiopian Air flights to/from Karachi and expressed keen interest in hiring technical experts from Pakistan in the field of engineering, pharmaceutical and IT sectors.

Both sides emphasised that in order to translate brotherly relations into meaningful economic and trade cooperation, frequent engagements at government-to-government and business-to-business level will be ensured.

Ethiopia is one of the strongest countries in Africa and they have stayed independent compared with so many of the other African countries. Things are all starting to come together for Pakistan. It would be great if Ethiopian started flying to KHI or ISB-I don't think a new airline has been added there in decades. PIA should work on getting a codeshare partnership as well.

Yes, if the fine work done by our commerce sections in the industrial and commercial power giants like Japan, Korea, US, Germany etc is any indication then the result will be zaro in Ethopia as well.
