The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) has empowered its chairman to direct the chief minister to dissolve the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly if the federal government did not verify votes in four constituencies of the National Assembly where the party claims electoral fraud took place in the 2013 general elections. The decision was unanimously passed on Wednesday evening.
There had been a hue and cry in the K-P Assembly after PTI chief Imran Khan’s statement on Tuesday in which he said the assembly would be dissolved if the government did not meet the party’s demands.
A PTI leader, who was present at the meeting, said the question of dissolution was discussed in detail on Wednesday. He added that the committee has fully empowered the party chairman to issue directives to the chief executive of the province as head of the party and therefore there is no second opinion on the matter.
The core committee meeting was chaired by Imran Khan at his Bani Gala residence. “We are demanding recount in four constituencies. We’ve submitted documentary evidence of massive rigging and are not going to accept anything less than recounting of votes,” the PTI official told The Express Tribune.
The PTI has been building pressure on the government to verify votes in constituencies, particularly four National Assembly constituencies, where the party believes its mandate was stolen.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has written a letter to National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq asking him to form a parliamentary committee comprising members from both houses of parliament and from every political party for electoral reforms.
