KARACHI: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Wednesday confirmed it had banned the sale of Xiaomi smartphones in Pakistan.

PTA Spokesman Khurram Mehran confirmed to Dawn.com that 'Mi devices' had been banned, saying, "They are not following the country's rules and laws."

"All phone sets have to be type-approved by the PTA and Xiaomi has not received type-approval yet."

Mehran could not confirm whether the smartphone maker had applied for type-approval, or if it had been denied.

Type-approval is a procedure that requires smartphone makers to submit their phone sets to the PTA, Mehran said.

"There is a form and there is a nominal fee. You need to submit these, then we see if the device can be approved or not," he said, adding that the PTA looked at technical specifications of phone sets, among other aspects.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi in a statement on its Pakistan website alleged that the PTA had barred the sale and marketing of all Mi devices in the country, hinting at foul play.

"The PTA has demanded that XiaomiPK.com has to stop the sale/marketing of all Mi mobile devices... We want our customers and people around the country to understand the monopoly of some brands in the market," the statement said, without clarifying which monopoly it was referring to.

"We believe that the Pakistani market deserves to have fair competition but these events make us ponder that some competitors believe in grabbing the market through influence instead of competing on the basis of quality and service."

The statement goes on to highlight how "surprising" it is that Pakistan's customers have been denied the right to buy Mi devices "without any reason".

"If they (PTA) have any legitimate concern, we are ready to address it, but so far we haven't received any rational reason."

In Pakistan its always the monopoly and the amount of money that can be made out of it. If Xiaomi enters it would be threat to Q mobile which is selling other mobile phones with its tag. Samsung will remain fine because its mostly for the higher end. Lenovo and Huawei will also face competition. Microsoft is non existent so it will hardly matter to them. By the way Homeshopping.pk was selling Xiaomi phones in Pakistan, does this mean they cant? Also what about directly importing them? I have heard people doing that.

To be honest i never ordered anything from them, but some of my cousins have and their friends and its legit according to them. Besides i believe they do give 24 hours checking warranty if there is a problem they are going to replace it.

Xiaomi Mi5 is a great flagship phone for less than half price of what S7, HTC 10 and others brand cost

Xaiomi redmi note 3 pro is very popular device with 4000Mah battery, fingerprint and great specification for just 20 thousand rupees

and they are 100 times better than this shit of Q mobile

I am using a xiaomi phone to type this. Great phones. Super screens. They have totally taken over Indian market.

Type-approval testing is a formality that the phone maker should go through , it's ultimately better for the consumer.

Part of Type-approval testing is EMI ( electromagnetic interference ) testing , which most electronic comms equipment has to go through anyway.

i smell foul play and Qmobile here..

.
interesting! did Samsung & apple also follow the same PTA regulations?
