SRINAGAR: Massive protests and clashes erupted in Indian Kashmir on Saturday after the bodies of two young women were found amid claims that they were raped and murdered by Indian soldiers, officials and locals said.

Indian authorities denied the allegations, saying the women appeared to have drowned in a local stream.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmir, and anger over the two deaths brought thousands to the town of Shopian, where protesters hurled rocks at security forces and ransacked government offices. The crowd chanted, ‘Produce the killers’ and ‘We want freedom,’ while they marched in the town center, 40 miles south of Srinagar, the region’s biggest city.

Police fired tear gas and used batons to break up the protests, said a local police officer on condition of anonymity in keeping with department policy. He said at least 25 people were injured in the clashes.

Human rights groups and separatist leaders have long accused the Indian military of using rape and sexual molestation to intimidate the local population.

Police official Javaid Masood said authorities recovered the bodies of an 18-year-old woman and her 23-year-old aunt from a local stream Saturday morning. The women were reported missing after they failed to return home from their orchard on Friday, Masood said.

‘Post-mortems have been conducted and preliminary investigation suggests that there are no signs of physical assault on the bodies,’ Masood said. He added that an investigation into the deaths was ongoing.

Many locals rejected the official explanation.

‘There are no chances of accidental drowning as the stream is very shallow and even school kids cross it,’ said Mushtaq Ahmed, a local resident.

Most people in Indian Kashmir favor independence from Hindu-majority India, or a merger with Muslim Pakistan. The disputed Himalayan territory is split between India and Pakistan, but claimed in full by both.

Separatists have been fighting Indian authorities since 1989 in a conflict that has killed more than 68,000 people, most of them civilians.

Special cell to probe death of two J&K women

SRINAGAR: The south Kashmir town of Shopian continued to reel under heightened tension as protests against the mysterious death of two young women continued for the second day.

The police have set up a Special Investigation Cell to probe the incident and the government has set a 48-hour deadline to identify the killers.

Neelofar (22) and Asiya (17) went missing on Friday from Shopian and their bodies were recovered from nearby rivulet on Saturday morning with bruises all over. Asiya was the sister-in-law of Neelofar. Locals and relatives alleged that there was conspiracy behind the killing saying that the women were raped and murdered.

The death sent shock waves in the area and thousands of people took to the streets demanding justice. They set on fire government property and damaged scores of vehicles.

On Sunday too anger was high on the streets and the police were seen trying to pacify the agitators.

Inspector-General of Police Kashmir zone B. Sirinivas assured the demonstrators that the guilty would not be spared. At a news conference, he said the Special Investigation Cell would be headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police. “At this stage we cannot frame an opinion and we are waiting for the autopsy report from the Forensic Sciences Laboratory,” he said.

Killing is killing no matter where it is, in this case India is guilty, why u say, we go by our experience of 60 years.

.
^^^^^these killing may be related to anti-social elements and you cannot make a country 100% crime less.Army may have nothing to do with this but separatist group always provokes anti government sentiments other wise they cannot digest their food.

Pakistan is having their own problems and quite obvious to world still 'dusron ke phatte main tang dalni hi hai':D

Agree with you till some extent "Killing is killing no matter where it is", but even scenario needs to be condidered. The is a probe ben ordered and should wait for the result of the same and who ever is the Culprit will be and have to be punished, no matter who he / she is. :tsk:

Why Rajkumar you bring in the World, now that u did let me tell you the other facts that u do not want to mention, that last visit by Britain's foreign minister in Indian was considered by India a big problem, whereas he in our opinion was right to ask India to solve the kashmir problem with Pakistan based on mutual agreements.

since u bring the world in what about Mr. Obama, the president of U.S. has clearly told India to solve the kashmir problem, I can continue, so please refrain from posting one sided opinion.
