Prospect of civil nuclear deal with Pakistan unlikely: White House

The prospect of a civil nuclear deal with Pakistan being talked about in the public domain is quite unlikely, the White House has said, but acknowledged that the US is in talks with Islamabad on issues related to nuclear safety and security.

"I know there's been a lot of public speculation about this (a civilian nuclear deal with Pakistan). In asking the same question to a lot of our folks here who are working on this issue, I would not be overly excited about the prospects of reaching the kind of agreement that is being speculated about publicly," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters at his daily news conference yesterday.

"Pakistan's Prime Minister will be here next week to meet with the President, and I'm wondering if you can confirm for us that the US is, in fact, serious about trying to work out a civilian nuclear deal with Pakistan and whether this is something that will come up in the meeting," he was asked by a White House reporter.

At this point, the US has been engaged with Pakistan as well as the rest of the international community, on issues related to nuclear safety and security, Earnest said.

"We continue to have confidence that the government of Pakistan is well aware of the range of potential threats to its nuclear arsenal, and we continue to be confident that Pakistan has a professional and dedicated security force that understands the importance and the high priority that the world places on nuclear security," he said in response to a question.

"The expectation that we have is that a deal like the one that's been discussed publicly is not something that's likely to come to fruition next week. But the United States and Pakistan are regularly engaged in a dialogue about the importance of nuclear security," Earnest said.

"I would anticipate that that dialogue would include conversations between the leaders of our two countries," he said in response to another question.PTI

More american patronizing rubbish. Take these articles with a pinch of salt. These type of people were saying in 2002 that Iraq has super weapons of mass destruction that can destroy Europe in 30 mins. Now they say the same about us. They want to weaken and destroy us.

.
The Iraqis also had a mature, sensible and diplomatic atmosphere with the americans between september 2002 to february 2003. Yet they were still massacred by them. Milions dead and a nation completely destroyed. Make no mistake about it, had we not had nuclear weapons and a powerful large military our fate would have been the same. Force, power and fearlessness is everything. Dialogue with the americans is meaningless. They just want to weaken us. Iraq and Afghanistan are prime examples. In all honesty, I have no fear of india or any other nation except america. I fear they may try to do to us what they did to the innocent Iraqis. Besides Pakistan simply DOES NOT have enough nuclear weapons for credible defence contrary to popular myth. Pakistan needs AT LEAST 1000 active nuclear weapons including long range thermonuclear bombs and massive hydrogen bombs, "continent busters"
america is a nation we need to be wary of and make adequate defences against.
Hey,

Quit the fearmongering. I must say I am very surprised given at the fact that you happen to live in UK ! and youre talking as if war is on your doorstep.

With Iraq, the problem was dictatorship Saddam Hussein. His people never approved of his reign, and that is also one of the reason why US was able to easily defeat IRAQ. 0

Thousand bombs???? who will pay for its security ? how will you secure it ?
Whats your age?

CONTINENT BUSTER ???

I am 36. If Pakistan becomes a fully militarized nation, curbs corruption and hangs the traitors I think we would be capable of a lot. Traitors are doing more damage to us at the moment than americans and Indians. PPP must be disbanded. Unlikely though.

There won't be a civil nuclear deal in this meeting. But the chances to start discussions with POTUS and some of the Republicans are there. Which, can work out later. There will be a new POTUS in the office soon so the ground work can start and it'll take a while to work out kinks on both sides (Dems and Reps), so this isn't going to get finalized in this one visit. But the foundation of later discussions can definitely start.

Don't know what is changing mood of west, now French think tank saying France should do nuclear deal with Pakistan.

Hi,

Then perhaps either you don't know what you just said or you're just another person who writes first then thinks later on.

Your suggestion of non existent conitental buster bomb and 1k bombs oh thermo nuke in nature shows your immaturity in the mentioned subject.

When is the last time you visited Pakistan ?

Sure, we can't neglect defence but if whole of your nation is starving or illiterate or doesn't have decent access to medical services unlike you using NHS. then what's the point of defending it 1k thermo bombs.

Learn to set the priorities right and eventually you will become powerful.

Its very easy to say all this when you're miles apart in aa peaceful country which is heavily involved in destabilizing pakistan.

True. I have been to Pakistan over 20 times. I was merely stating the end result. Of course we must empower, expand and advance our economy in order to become a significant military power. If we can achieve what we have militarily with a poor economy imagine what we could with a strong economy. Potentially we could reach the same level as some of the European nations.

This is given and known except those who are too drunk on Johnny Walker. Why do our politicians go there to be humiliated and do thawaf of the White House? Oh wait, those waiting for visas and those living there also do the same, so nothing changes! Like an alim said; leaders don't come from the sky, they come from the people! Rotten people, rotten rulers!

If anyone has any influence stop them from going there to be dictated on nuclear safety. More propaganda to make look like our nukes are insecure and make Pakistan look bad! Beggars who have no self-respect!

Its called a democratic and stable system that the leaders in the West like. The main purpose I spend time on here, trying to preach the importance of maintaining a stable political system with peace in Pakistan.

The world sees stability, peace inside Pakistan, with a strong government who is business friendly and has started to grow the economy. Result is every big corporation is adding Pakistan into the list of most profitable markets, including the Civil Nuclear supply. That's billions of profit right there and long term for decades to come. Why miss it? This means that perspective of Pakistan in the eyes of the world has changed too. Pakistan went from a "liability" to a sovereign growing nation with ability to be a regional power in the future. This is why I preach the "system and democracy" so much on here. That's what's taking and will take Pakistan to the top 15th economy.

Disarm ourselves, weaken Pakistan and please the west. Let us champion democracy. When we are weaken well get steam rolled by the west and vanquished forever. But hey, we made the west happy. That's what counts. Sound familiar? Just ask the Iraqis, Afghans, Libyans and Syrians. They'll explain it to you.
