This BBC Panorama Documentary was broadcast on the 16th of June 1980. Project 706 was the codeword for the Pakistani atom bomb project.

I saw this first when I was a young man. I still remember my dad being excited. Watching this again I cannot but help be impressed. Many times I just I lose hope in this country called Pakistan. But watching this proves that when Pakistani's get their act togather nothing is impossible.

How the hell did a poor, undeveloped country like Pakistan under the very nose of the West and with a hostile, loud, huge, oversized Goliath on our east manage to pull this off in less than eight years? This was a stupendous achievement and there is no doubt about this. More than the bomb this proved that what we as a people are capable of. If you watch the documantary at one point they mention that the Westerner's were so laid back ( don't forget this is 1970s ) as they looked on their ex colony as ignorant brown people who possibly could not have the brains to figure out anything let alone make use of the high tec stuff our people bought in the West. They actually thought it would rust away. Boy did they not get a shock.

I would like to give credit for the atom bomb. In doing so I am going to ignore politics, ethnic groups or religion. These are the vices that weaken us Pakistani and will prevent Pakistan moving to a future that she justly deserves. I am a strong believer that power comes out of the barrrel of the gun and the only language the world understands. Go look at Iraq, Syria and how Iran is is being bullied right now. The weak do not inherit the earth contrary to what the Christian bible peaches. The almost extinct native peoples of Americas, Australia and enslaving of Africa dispels that notion.

I feel we need to cut back on our regular forces and instead focus on more potent nuclear strike worse that gives all our antagnists jeepers creepers and sleepless nights. I would also love to see in the future a day where we extend our nuclear protection to our Muslim brothers on the West. I am frankly sick of the West throwing it's weight about and then walk away with a arrogant attitude. The destruction of Middle East in our times is evidence of that and then having created mass migrant problem look on with air of indiferance and superiority. We must though regard our nuclear assets as purely defensive and never post it as offensive threat.

Humans are not perfect. Even great leaders will have annoying sides to their character. Most will have made terrible mistakes but then went on to do great and good. However whatever wrongs they did the good should never be forgotten. Here is my list in order for the credit of the Pakistan bomb. Every Pakistani should keep these men in their minds.

(i) Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto - There is no doubt about him being top on the list. ZAB initiated the project in 1972. We all know about the " eat grass story". He was the impetus behind it. If anybody deserves to be called "father of Pakistani bomb" it should ZAB. He had the vision, the decisiveness and political courage to make the vision real.

(ii) Prof. Abdus Salam and Munir Ahmed Khan - In my book both share the second slot. Prof. Salam for having laid the seeds of intellectuel assets back in 1950s and 1960s. Structures like PINSTECH were to become nurseries that hatched the nuclear know how. When Bhutto made the call for the bomb in 1972 Pakistan had the neccessary human resources to answer that call. If this had not been the case even Gaddafi could have built the bomb. After all he had the money. The differance was by 1970s Pakistan had the scientists to do the job. Prof. Salam had enabled the creation of this pool by his efforts as early as 1950s. Prof. Salam had pushed President Ayub Khan in 1960s.

Munir Ahmed Khan also gets the same credit. He provided a steady firm hand in giving this herculean project going through to fruition. Under him was nourished countless scientists who would work for years towards the final goal.

(iii) Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan - He also gets his credit for getting the centrifuges to Pakistan. I know he did some silly things later but nothing can detract from his role. Although I don't like his lust for glory and claming every as his credit.

(iv) The unknown - All the thousands that worked tirelessly to make this possible. Their names will never be known. Many took risks such as our point man in Paris Embassy Mr Butt. These people working in Europe on a clanestine project could have been arrested or worse killed as happens in the murky and dirty world of international politics. Making a bomb like this is above all a team effort. It takes thousands of people all with differant set of skills to work togather over years to make it possible. So let us spare some thought to these unkown faces.

Ps. I would just clarify this with few thoughts. AQKhan did terrible things later on. He also in my view was to eager to claim the entire credit for the bomb onto himself. That shows lack of integrity and character. Great men let truth speak not do everything to embellish their name. Humility is virtue that AQ could have learnt. However much as I don't like him I cannot ignore what he did. I said nobody is perfect thus he makes into his rightful position. We see in Munir Akram the opposite. A humble man who just got on with the job instead of seeking publicity.

I also would like to mention Prof. Abdus Salam. The only man who blessed Pakistan with a Nobel prize in science. How can we overlook this guy? The history of the Pakistani Atom project exposes all what is great about us but also what is ugly about us. We need to learn from this and make amends for this.

The other thing that shocks me is the speed with which our boy's did this in. The project was initiated in 1972 and end of 1970s was heading for cold test. The BBC documentary was aired in summer 1980 and soon after the bomb was "cold tested".

"Kissinger waited for a while and said in a cultured tone "I have not come to advise you, USA has various reservations about Pakistan's atom programme, therefore yopu have no way out, except agreeing to what I say" Bhutto smiled and asked "suppose if I refuse then what?" Henry Kissinger become deadly serious.

He locked his eyes on Bhutto and said "then we will make a horrible example of you" Bhutto's face flushed. He stood up and extended his hand towards Kissinger and said "Pakistan can live without the US President, now your people will have to find another ally in the region" Bhutto then turned around and walked out.

This should also sober up those who go around trying to raise concerns about our bomb. We have now had it for almost 40 years. That is long time so no rubbish about "Pakistan nukes" please. We have had the capability now for almost four decades so they will stay safe thanks. Yes, you never know ,anything can happen but that is also applicable to USA, Russia, UK, China, France, India or Isreal. The following statement by US State department I think sums it up nicely.

"The United States is confident that the Government of Pakistan is well aware of its responsibilities and has secured its nuclear arsenal accordingly. While there is room for improvement in the security of any country’s nuclear programs, Pakistan has a professional and dedicated security force that fully understands the importance of nuclear security"

Pakistan Nuclear Security

Finally I would like to add my firmly held suspicion. I believe that by 1975 United States had become aware of Bhutto's atom bom project and America had decided to take out Bhutto by any means at their disposal. The threat given to Bhutto by Henry Kissinger in 1976 "we will make a horrible example of you!” was not some empty threat. It was a deadly threat by a superpower.

He locked his eyes on Bhutto and said " then we will make a horrible example of you" Bhutto's face flushed. He stood up and extended his hand towards Kissinger and said "Pakistan can live without the US President, now your people will have to find another ally in the region" Bhutto then turned around and walked out.

I believe Bhuttos's refusal to buckle to threats would lead his overthrow by Gen. Zia. It is possible and we will never know but it is possible that Gen. Zia was a stooge of America. At any rate the threat by Kissinger was signed, sealed and delivered when Bhutto was hanged. We have cases like Dr. Mossadegh government in Iran being overthrown by CIA organized coup.

One day despite all their flaws I hope in Islamabad they erect the statues of ZAB, Abdus Salam, Munir Akram and AQKhan. Heroes are never perfect.

Please edit, it say's Munir Akram in many places, it's Munir Ahmed, thank you.

Pakistan certainly was very lucky, narrow window that it got, we certainly made good use of it, with lack of resources and etc, etc, it certainly is a miracle, PAEC deserves a lot of credit here, along with other heroes who played a role. Munir Ahmed played a key role, all the way through ,the most important, it is a shame that he has been given a negative image, a CIA agent to be exact.

The greatest blessing this bomb has given us is that our borders are now secure inshaAllah.
This bomb is a gift of Allah to our nation.Nobody in the Muslim world got it Allah has blessed us and we should be thankful to Him.
.....
The bomb guarantees that the myth of a greater India can't be materialized anymore.
The enemies of Pakistan have actually dropped the idea of dominating us through military might now.
Because of the bomb,the focus is now on weakening us internally.Internal unrest,political,religious and ethnic divides have been supported and nurtured.
And it's working.
Sometimes I wonder why did Allah allow Pakistan's inception,we are such a useless people.But then He gave us the bomb.
Despite all the mess we're in,I have a ray of hope that Pakistan has a greater role in the world politics in the future.
Perhaps sometime we will wake up from the slumber..

.
Bhutto zia all contribute to the developmentof Islamic bomb actually they keep their focus on development of nuclear wepons at any cost. Zia probably had the leverage due to Soviets aggrassion of Afghanistan .what would happened if Soviet didnot invade what us action would come?

. . . .
Sometimes it hard to believe how capable Pakistan was !

Yes. We should draw some lessons from this atom project. The people who contributed were from wide variety of backgrounds. Those who today discriminate on basis of these divisions are helping to divide Pakistan and weaken it. We have perfect example of Iraq which like a shark that has gone crazy is tearing itself apart along ethnic and sectarian lines. Unity is the basic foundation of any strong nation.

* Sunni
* Shia
* Ahmedi
* Christian
* All ethnic groups

We all know about Nobel prize winner Professor Abdus Salam but many don't know about Pakistan's "Rocket Man" the Polish Air Commodore Władysław Józef Marian Turowicz who served in Pakistan Air Force.

In initial stages, before Salam left the country in protest, he was guiding Munir ahmed, even helped contribute to the program.

President Zia, DG Security Nuclear Program, Lt.Gen Naqvi. DG counter-intelligence Brigadier Tabraiz all expressed and had their doubts about Munir ahmed khan. In there own words, Munir Ahmed khan tried to sabotage and delay the Plutonium program. He falsified/fudged data. Sensitive data was leaked/ stolen from him when he was returning to Pakistan from unidentified country who was helping Pakistan and he was transiting at some airport. ISI cast doubts on Munir ahmed and DG Counter Intelligence specifically asked Zia to remove Munir ahmed and his team from PAEC. But Zia retained his services until he retired

Americans already knew inner workings of our nuclear program. Our foriegn minister saw Abdus Salam Colluding with americans.

Whatever PAEC miracles are, it happened at the end of munir ahmed tenure mostly under the 2nd gen leaership and team of Dr.Samar mubarikmand, Sultan Bashiruddin and several other scientists whose name slipped from my mind

While AQ Khan route was shortcut and it led Pakistan create atom bomb more quickly through uranium path. So in this regard AQ khan should be given whole credit for assembling a complete team at Kahuta, KRL, playing role of manager and integrator. Assembling team of overseas Pakistanis, Foreign procurement through UAE, Kuwaiti Sheikhs companies.

Pakistan plutonium program matured only in early 2000. While Uranium program matured in early 90's. So one should not brush aside the AQ achievements no matter how much a low life he is.

@Bratva This is the problem with Pakistan. You just did indulged in cheap character assasination without even forwarding any credible links. If our DG Security Nuclear Program etc were so eagle eyed then they must have been only looking in one direction while AQKhan opened a account with Ebay auctioning atom bombs like Chinese copies of Iphones.

Maybe if they had been looking in the right place they might have got the bad guy but similar to our incompetant or corrupt police who tend to nab the good guy's while the villian runs off.

About Abdus Salam that is just plain simple sordid prejudice. This is the man who laid the foundation of high science in Pakistan and nurtured an entire crop of future scientists many still alive. The tragedy of the Project 706 is those who intiated it, those who pushed for, those who were there at the start have been pushed on the sidelines because of the changing prejudices of society and politics.

While other publicity seekers have grabbed the entire limelight. Truth will come out one day.

Ps. And if they had even shred of suspicion it belies any sense, in fact it is criminal that Munir was left in his position by Zia and the rest. At this level of operations people have to be irreproachable. To my eyes the fact that Munir was left says everything. Actions speak louder than words. The fact that Munir was left in charge speaks volumes.

Awesome sharing sir @Atanz I didn't know about this documentary or about Project 706. I have read a lot about our nuclear program and its history but this documentary has presented a whole different aspect of it.

Thanks for sharing this. :tup:

Because the jarnails were involved in the first place. AQ Khan was a "gift everyone a Rolex" mentality business man who ended up being the front man for this nuclear bazaar operation run within our establishment. Granted, the bazaar had motives to either get strategic alliances or trade off tech(as with NK for the Ghauri). But at the end it was nothing more than a bazaar of WMD set up where many of these men made millions. Benazir knew of it pretty well and despite her sanctimonious rants in her books gave the ok to sell out nuclear tech for these gains.

Profiles of Intelligence - Birgadier (R) Tibrizi Ex DG Counter Intelligence ISI

Memoirs of Lt.GEN Naqvi

Memoirs of Sahibzada Yaqub khan (who was foriegn minister at time of zia)

There is no cheap publicity or character assassination. These are the people who had more knowledge about Munir character and his activities then you have. Unless you can quote other with a better source which supercedes these personalities, I will be willing to change my opinion

Oh Brigadier Tibrizi speculated Munir ahmed khan became a double agent, hence Zia retained his services. He fed wrong info to CIA and Americans at later stages of life. That's why Zia didn't any action on ISI + Gen Naqvi reports on Munir ahmed

@syedali73 @MastanKhan Your comments please............?
It is better to keep quite on issues such as these. I have spoken in few threads but it seems that certain 'lobby' is hell-bent on giving credit to Salam and Munir for some achievement that they never achieved. Someone is doing it simply because Khan, in his view, is Urdu speaker (though Khan belonged to Bhopal, that was established by Pashtoon tribes) and this particular poster has grudges against Urdu speakers (practically nangi gaalian on certain threads, I have saved their snapshots) and another because of his lack of knowledge. At any rate, it does not matter who grabs the credit, what matters is we have a deterrent and people of Pakistan are safe.

@Bratva: Your arguments are falling on deaf ears. There are more sinister reasons for giving credit to Salam and Munir than they appear here.

I'm privy to a lot more, but this forum has a very low threshold for those with opposing views. this is why I troubled you. Apologies Sir.

Secondly, don't understand why posters who like to summarize things, or post to the point posts, are looked down upon. On the other hand posters even some TTA's who post pages and pages of xyz are commended.

Forget maturity, makes one wonder to the level of sanity of this forum!
