Prince Talal to invest in 1000mw power station in Bangladesh

Well Mr. Talat Certainly a rich man. But I did not like his attitude last time when he visited BD with some investment plan. He offered to buy Shonargon Hotel while staying in it. He also offered to invest in power plant if he was exempted of tendering process. What kind of businessman makes such offer? Oil money can only take somebody to that much. Another Idiot (I forgot his name) from Saudi Royal family participated in Rupali Bank privatization tendering. He made an offer of 300 million to buy it. But once all the offer was made open, he found that his offer was almost double than his nearest competitor. After realizing his stupidity, he back tracked and stopped receiving any phone call from BD government.

Good luk Mr. Talat in my country.

If he can get away with what he does, than why wouldn't he.

You gotta understand the clout of the Saudis. Most of the alleged 9/11 hijackers were Saudis, but Iraq got bombed and Saddam got hanged for it. When Bush described his Axis of Evil, Saudi Arabia was not one of those evils.

I personally like Prince Talat. He is quiet different than other craps. He frequently interact with common people by holding some kind of big meeting. And fulfill or try to fulfill demand of those people.

I acknowledge your point. But, the meeting with common people is a very much good Arab tradition. Even King Abdullah or any other Arab Monarch would go to the desert with his retinue, camp there in the tents and would allow common people to meet him and talk. It has been going on since historical times. I wish the same would have been our culture.

Ignore the baffoon.

Given a choice the Saudis chose the West to invest and hang out with. Its their call. If they are happy, hey so be it.

If they build a 1000mw power station, well BD will take it.

All the people with big money do not really go for running a plant or a business because it is a hard work. Usually, they invest in the share market. They buy cheap and sell higher to make a quick profit. It is not only the Arabs, but also the rich people of the western world. Their funds are called Hedge Funds. Probably, the Qataris and now this Saudi have come to Bd to make themselves in a position to buy stocks after a few years to make a big profit. These people usually then fly away with their NAJAEZ dollars.

Prince Talal is welcome to make any investments he deems fit. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always been at the side of Bangladeshi people through thick and thin. They have given us millions of dollars grants with no strings attached in various development projects since 1975 (I personally know of Rural Electrification Board, as my father was one of the founding engineers of this org.) and given us generous donations in natural disasters. They have also given employment to 2 million Bangladeshi expatriate workers and have been consistently the single largest source of remittance for Bangladesh.

As for caustic remarks from some Bangladeshi's, we have a vibrant democracy with a diversity of opinions, but many are not thinking of our national interest, in my opinion, when making irresponsible comments.

Saudi or any Arab talk of financing projects in other muslim countries would have propelled these countries to self-sustaind economic growth. But, I personally do not believe the newspaper propaganda. A business deal (or a commitment?) in a 3-hour tarnsit/stopover in the dirty Capital of Bangladesh is not possible. Arabs are not known for impulsiveness with their money, they can wait for a million years without a hurry.

The welcome ceremony reminds me of the welcome given to a rich City dweller by his poor peasant relative living in the countryside. Talal reception news has disgusted me. Like the poor peasant, BD may get a few gold coins as Bakshish, but it should not expect any investment from those Arab pigs.

The Arab guys have lost $3 trillion (note it is $3,000 billion) in the security and investment markets during the worldwide economic meltdown 4 years ago. But, these fat pigs are still waiting the whites of europe and america. They will never invest in poor muslim countries, period!

You seem to be angry with Arab. Understand that it's their money so they can spend it as fer their wish. I expect more responsible comments from you EastWatch. I will just remind you that Saudi Arabia always stand by our side when we need them in rainy day.

@eastwatch you are acting worst than racist evangilical cristians here who show the most
xenophobia towards arabs and muslim. I don't know what kind of problems you people have with arabs but muslims are not racist and as such we muslims can not term our arab borthers as "p**". You may hate the sheiks but why are you badmouthing Arabs for the ills of some corrupt sheiks. DO sheiks represent arab population? And this same KSA was always there for us and has 2 million of our workers working there. When ever there is any natural calamities, its KSA who comes first, in the last sidor they donated some $$100 million. They even support us with cheap oil on credit. I don't know any other country that helped us through thick and thin like KSA. If you want to bad mouth any one bad mouth our gov and stupid bureaucracy that fails to garner any
investment, not only from KSA but form any other country.

1) The present govt is inviting dignitaries to showcase its success in bringing in foreign investments. But, I do not see any forthcoming of investment from the Arabs. They are more at ease in the boardroom meeting with the whites and Jews in an airconditioned room. BD is dusty, noisy and its weather is not suitable for them who are used to a hot climate , but not to a hot and humid climate.

2) I can cite the name of one country-Japan that developed without FDI. No european or American investors thought it wise to invest in a country already dead with the after effects of WWII. Japan was already an industrially developed country, but was poor and the living standard of its people was very poor. So, the Japanese policy makers decided to use its own capital to build the country to european standard. This they did ultimately.

3) Possibly, it is the fate of Bangladesh to build itself with its own money because not many investors want to invest in a volatile country with emotional people and humid weather. However, I think, it is not that impossible to build up a country without foreign investment., although it takes a little longer time than it is with FDI.

4) BD already has quite a number of rich conglomerates whose investment will propel the country's economy upward, hopefully. This is already happening. Now-a-days the rate of investment has fallen to about only 19.8% of the GDP. It is not big, but, the govt borrowings from Banks will give a boost in the construction of social and physical infrastructures of the country.

5) Spending in infrastructures is actually a kind of investment, the return of which will come very slowly over many years. So, both the private and the public sector investments are equally important for a balanced growth. An expanding economy always borrow money from the future. It is happening in BD. However, much of the govt money may go only to the greedy AL cadres.
