If China wants to take its military to the next level, then it needs to expand its military export market. China, at the moment, only caters exports to poorer developing nations, even though China have weapons that rival Western and Russian offerings. China need to address the perception that Chinese weapons are inferior to Western and Russian arms. This is why I think a limited conflict with either Vietnam or Philippines, over SCS dispute, could be a great opportunity to show the World the effectiveness of modern Chinese weapons. By using overwhelming firepower on weak enemies, like Vietnam or Philippines, it will demonstrate the worth of Chinese weapons, just in the same way USA uses the same strategy against weakling nations.
If China hopes to become a World Power, then it first needs to show it is the Regional Power in Asia. Putting countries, like Vietnam and Philippines, in their place would go a long way to demonstrate China's new military prowess. Let's hope Vietnam or Philippines give China an excuse to use its new toys.
