Musharraf orders for immediate release of women prisoners involved in crimes other than terrorism, murder

ISLAMABAD: President General Pervez Musharraf has ordered for immediate release of all women prisoners involved in the crimes other than murder, robbery and terrorism.
The decision was taken in a high level meeting held in President camp office Rawalpindi on Saturday.
Besides Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, secretary general Mushahid Hussain, information minister Mohammad Ali Durrani, minister of state for information, Tariq Azeem, law minister Wasi Zafar, minister for women development Sumaira Malik, minister for tourism, Ms Neelofar Bakhtiar, senior advisor to the president Sharif ud Din Pirzada, attorney general Makhdoom Ali Khan, minister for religious affairs, Ejaz Ul Haq and chairman Council of Islamic Ideology, Khalid Masood also attended the meeting.
The meeting reviewed the matters related to amendments in Hudood Ordinance, law reforms package and grant of relief to women prisoners in the jails.
President reiterated that government believed in provision of inexpensive and speedy justice to the people. Prompt steps should be taken in this respect, he stressed.
The President on the recommendation of ministry of women development issued orders for immediate release of women prisoners from the jails who are not involved in the cases of robbery, murder and terrorism. He directed the law ministry to finalize all legal process till Monday in this respect.
President will promulgate ordinance in this regard, which will come to effect immediately. Under this ordinance, relief would be provided to the women prisoners.
Aboud Hudood Ordinance the president stressed that the Council of Islamic Ideology should bring amendment in it with consensus, which are compatible with Islamic law and values. Hudood ordinance was authored by one man and it can be changed. However, it should not be abused.
President asked the council of Islamic ideology to take along all the school of thoughts and then amendment be made with consensus opinion.
President also issued directives to end the discriminatory law against the women and directed the government to go for comprehensive and effective legislation in this connection.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz told the meeting that government was working in effective manner to integrate women folk to national mainstream and bringing to end the outmoded and archaic customs.
Law minister Wasi Zafar told after the meeting that formal approval has been accorded to the law reforms package in the meeting. This will be enforced in the form of ordinance and public opinion will also be sought on it. It may be recalled that the package is under active consideration of NA standing committee on law and justice. End.
