Beji Caid Essebsi announced this Sunday, March 22 that Tunisia will be "non-NATO member key ally" in the show "Le Grand Rendez-Vous" broadcast live from the Bardo Museum.

The President of the Republic who will travel with his presidential staff in the US during the month of May where he was invited by US President Barack Obama confirmed this information.

« Nous sommes pour cette formule là et nous avons accepté ce principe et j’espère qu’au moment où nous irons aux Etats-Unis nous allons formaliser ceci. »

"We are for this formula there and we accepted this and I hope that when we go to the United States we will formalize this. »

A NATO non member major ally is a designation granted by the US to allies with strategic relations with the US armed forces, but not part of the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty) .

This "privileged" status, according to Jean-Pierre Elkabach, NATO non-member major ally assign certain rights to Tunisia for defense, for cooperation and for growth.

Nations named as major non-NATO allies are eligible for the following benefits:

  • entry into cooperative research and development projects with the Department of Defense (DoD) on a shared-cost basis
  • participation in certain counter-terrorism initiatives
  • purchase of depleted uranium anti-tank rounds
  • priority delivery of military surplus (ranging from rations to ships)
  • possession of War Reserve Stocks of DoD-owned equipment that are kept outside of American military bases
  • loans of equipment and materials for cooperative research and development projects and evaluations
  • permission to use American financing for the purchase or lease of certain defense equipment
  • reciprocal training
  • expedited export processing of space technology
  • permission for the country's corporations to bid on certain DoD contracts for the repair and maintenance of military equipment outside the United States

The EU as a neighbor of the Arab world has publicly stated that there is a growing need for cooperation. Not only political and economic but also military cooperation. So this news comes as no surprise. Expect to see more of such news in the future.

As neighbors we need to work together to combat common challenges whatever they might be as none of us are going anywhere.

We have several millennium old ties with neighboring Southern Europe. Be it Iberia (Al-Andalus), Italy (Roman Empire) or nearby Greece.

I cannot post links yet but search on "Arab League and European Union relations" and take a look at the recent deals that were signed between the Arab League and the EU in Cairo a few weeks ago.

i'm wondering does this new status will make us ( if asked ) part of military intervention like if they decide to go to Libya fighting isis and terror
like Australia in ISAF it's a non-NATO member Major Ally

What sort of security challenges is Tunisia facing for it to think about becoming a major Non-Nato ally ? Plus would this interfere with it having close relations with the French military ?
