As for DPP, there will be only two available options for them.

1. Just to keep the status quo, and letting PRC to keep curbing their economic growth. In result, Taiwan will soon turn into a third world sh1thole, and all Taiwanese will eventually lose all their superiority complex in front of the Chinese Mainlanders and will beg for mercy.

2. Just doing something bold and stupid by breaching the status quo and declaring the referendum for the independence, then see what will happen as the consequence.

KMT has been associated with big business too much recently while DPP nurtured favorable feelings among the low class and the peasant.

The mismanagement of a series of crises over the past two years (food scandals, gas explosion and all that) have rubbed salt to the wound. DPP made good use of it and, as usual, media worked miraculously to not to remind people of DPP's own historic mismanagement and corruption when they ruled Taiwan.

Taiwan politics has just turned one notch up as a fun clown show to watch from Mainland China, I guess.

But, come the presidential elections, do not expect an easy victory for the DPP. China, if it ever wishes, can exert heavy influence and affect voters' choice. But, I am not sure, whether Beijing does not really think the DPP would not be a gift sent from heaven.

We will see. China can open up the economic lines to bolster up TW's economy over the next two years and, as economy gets better, KMT will gain strength. If China's investment and import continues to drop, then read it as an covert support for a DPP regime in TW.

I agree. National unification comes above anything else. US did not ensure national unification without bloodshed, either. I wish the political dispute is sorted out at the negotiation table with Taiwan relegating all sovereign rights to Beijing, but, when it comes to national sovereignty, be it if some eggs have to be cracked.
