This is Bandari Base and if you now look closely you will find a very advance hanger in center.Its front side closing is strange.I never see this type before on all 98 air bases of Pakistan.

The hanger you speak of above is actually designed to house the Reaper UAV & its sensors in an air conditioned atmosphere which is why you see the auto-elliptical doors at the front. The US has been using such modern hangers to also house the B2B Stealth Bombers at Diego Garcia Island just south of Maldives. These hangers protect the equipment from high temperatures and direct sunlight in open areas.

LONDON: The CIA is using the Shamsi airbase in Balochistan to launch the Predator drones that attack Al Qaeda and Taliban targets in Pakistan, The Times, London, has claimed.

According to The Times, the CIA has been using the airfield — originally built by Arab sheikhs for falconry expeditions — for at least a year. Key to the Times investigation is the unexplained delivery of 730,000 gallons of F34 aviation fuel to Shamsi last year. The Defence Energy Support Centre website shows that a civilian company was contracted to deliver the fuel, worth $3.2 million, from Pakistan Refineries near Karachi. A spokesman for the US embassy in Pakistan told The Times: “Shamsi is not the final destination.” However, he declined to elaborate.

“No. No. No. No. No. We unequivocally and emphatically can tell you that there is no basing of US troops in Pakistan,” he said. “There is no basing of US Air Force, Navy, Marines, Army, none, on the record and emphatically. I want that to be very clear. And that is the answer any way you want to put it. There is no base here, no troops billeted. We do not operate here.”

The CIA declined to comment, as did the Pentagon. But one senior Western source familiar with US operations in Pakistan and Afghanistan told The Times that the CIA “runs Predator flights routinely” from Shamsi. The experts The Times talked to said that Shamsi’s airstrip was too short for most aircraft, but big enough for Predators.

Major General Athar Abbas, the chief military spokesman, confirmed that US forces were using Shamsi. “The airfield is being used only for logistics,” he said, without elaborating.

Shahbaz is being used for Logistics, UAV Recon Flights and for Emergencies

Shamsi is best suited for armed MQ-9 operations, partly because there Taxiing is easier (Taxiing a UAV is a real chore).

UAV operations are controlled through RF Links (UHF/VHF) during the takeoff and landing Phases. Following climb out the control is passed on to Edwards AFB USA through a Satellite Link. Target coordinates are generated by CIA and Pak Intel Agencies and data linked in real time.

UAV's are easy to track and shoot down if our Government seriously desires so.

Reaper / Predator cannot operate from Aircraft carriers, and they do not have the range to fly in from Edwards AFB California.

Nobody respects nations that do not respect themselves and do not care about their sovereignty. Musharraf and now Zardari governments have trashed our self respect; therefore we are treated worse than beggars. Our country is attacked by UAV’s operating from our own soil.

Iran did not compromise on its sovereignty and maintained its dignity. The US effectively handed over Iraq to Iran after having run out of options. Now they are cajoling Iran to bail them out in Afghanistan as well.

I know that Anwar2; I am aware that the USAF flew reapers from Bandari Airfield. I have never said or claimed that the UCAV's are being flown from Shahbaz or even inside Pakistan. The fact is that most of the drone strikes take place in areas fully controlled by militants. NO UNBIASED reports are possible because the militants cordon off the areas and do not permit first hand press reports until hours or days later. No one knows how many "innocent" people are killed, IF ANY. So your statement above is PURE speculation on your part.

Well, then how can you claim the victims were militants? Do you have any proof of it? Do you have any proof, the militant cordoned off the areas? You should not claim the victims as militants because you also can't prove it. It's also a speculation.

You rely on your media. Your media shows what it wants to show!! In our national and local newspaper, we've seen local tribes showing their broken homes. We've seen people protesting on drone strikes. Often, we see reports and columns in news paper about the innocents being killed in these attacks. Often, we listen the victims were women and children. Often, we see tribes' reaction in our media. These reports are usually sent by correspondents present on the ground.

It was revealed that all the people killed, in drone strike on Jan. 23, were innocent. They have no link to any of terrorist group. Their names were published in newspaper. Have your media told you about this?

Revenge is the tradition of Tribes. If you killed their people, they would retaliate. This should not be a surprise for us, If they join hands with Taliban for retaliation. Intelligence reports may be wrong. Plz Remember the wrong intelligent reports of WMD in Iraq. What happened then? A war with killings of more than 750,000 innocent Iraqis besides other devastation. On such a level, US got wrong intelligence reports, how can it be sure about the residents/guests of a single house? Drones come on the basis of intelligence reports, drop the missiles and go back. BUT think about the suffering of the relatives of those victims if they are innocent civilians. Nothing can compensate the human life.

There is also a view in Pakistan about the strategy, US implemented in 90s in Iraq. That was exactly the same as in Pakistan now. The strategy was to soften the country by drone attacks. What do you say about this?

The United States is using an airbase in Balochistan to launch predator strikes in Pakistan’s tribal areas, British newspaper The Times has reported.

The newspaper states that it has carried out detailed investigations into the matter and all findings confirm that the CIA has control over the Shamsi airbase, located near the Pak-Afghan border.

‘Key to the Times investigation is the unexplained delivery of 730,000 gallons of F34 aviation fuel to Shamsi. Details were found on the website of the Pentagon’s fuel procurement agency. The Defence Energy Support Centre site shows that a civilian company, Nordic Camp Supply (NCS), was contracted to deliver the fuel, worth $3.2 million, from Pakistan Refineries near Karachi. Paul Smyth, head of operational studies at the Royal United Services Institute, said that 730,000 gallons of F34, also known as JP8, was not enough to supply regular Hercules tanker flights but was sufficient to sustain drones or helicopters,’ the paper said.

According to the report, a spokesman for the US embassy in Pakistan denied reports of the airfield being used as a drone base. However, an unnamed US official, familiar with operations in Pakistan confirmed the presence of drones at the base, saying that the CIA runs Predator flights routinely from Shamsi base.

Locals contacted by the newspaper were aware of the presence of ‘planes’ at the base and said the base was an out-of-bounds high-security zone guarded by local military personnel but was under the control of US forces.

The paper adds: Major General Athar Abbas, the chief military spokesman, confirmed that US forces were using Shamsi. ‘The airfield is being used only for logistics,’ he said, without elaborating. He added that the Americans were also using another airbase near Jacobabad, 300 miles northeast of Karachi, for logistics and military operations.

The base, originally built by Arab sheikhs for their personal use, is said to be perfect for use by drones given its remote location and restricted access

Frankly and as I said before, I am glad that the Americans are doing this elimination job for us! Its better this way because if we take the same tools and kill the same people, we will be blamed for killing our own people, however low that collateral damage may be in light of the larger benefit of eliminating the notorious foreigners. Where The UAVs Live In Pakistan

February 19, 2009: Google Earth, until recently, showed three U.S. Global Hawk UAVs parked at a Pakistani air base. This find quickly spread around the Internet, and when it became known at the Pentagon, a call was made to Google, and that image disappeared from Google Earth. Google earth will remove images, especially those involving military matters, if a government requests it. More recent images of the Pakistani air base shows a large new hanger has been built, one that could easily hold several Global Hawks.

Google Earth images are often several years old.

It has been common knowledge in Pakistan that the U.S. was using two airbases for UAV (mainly Predator and Reaper) operations. One is in Baluchistan (the southwest) some 50 kilometers from the Afghan border. The other is 500 kilometers northeast of Karachi. Both bases were also used by American helicopters and transport aircraft.

It's only in the last two years that there have been enough Global Hawk UAVs available for three of them to show up on one Pakistani air base. Eight U.S. RQ-4 Global Hawk UAVs were delivered in 2008, and five the year before. Over a dozen are in production, as well as ground station equipment for controlling and maintaining the aircraft. All nine of the RQ-4A ("Block 10") aircraft have been built (seven for the U.S. Air Force and two for the U.S. Navy). The recent deliveries, and the ones in production are the larger RQ-4B (block 20, 30 and 40) models.

In the last eight years, RQ4s have flown over 25,000 hours, over 70 percent of that combat missions, and many of them from Persian Gulf and Pakistani bases. Some of the more recent models have been able to fly 20 hour missions, land for refueling and maintenance, and be off in four hours for another twenty hours in the sky. Global Hawk is able to keep an unblinking eye on large chunks of the Pakistani tribal areas, and do it 24/7. This is believed to be a crucial element in the campaign against Taliban and al Qaeda leaders along the Pakistani border. During the last year, over a hundred of these terrorists have been killed, many of them senior people. The Taliban tend to think that they were given up by local informers, not some high flying (60,000 feet up, and thus out of sight from the ground) robotic aircraft.

The RQ-4 has been very reliable, with aircraft being ready for action 95 percent of the time. The U.S. Air Force is now ordering only RQ-4B Global Hawks, at a cost of about $60 million each. This version is larger (wingspan is 15 feet larger, at 131 feet, and it's four feet longer at 48 feet) than the A model, and can carry an additional two tons of equipment. To support that, there's a new generator that produces 150 percent more electrical power.

The first three RQ-4Bs entered service in 2006. At 13 tons, the Global Hawk is the size of a commuter airliner (like the Embraer ERJ 145), but costs nearly twice as much. Global Hawk can be equipped with much more powerful, and expensive, sensors, than other UAVs. These more the double the cost of the aircraft. These spy satellite quality sensors (especially AESA radar) are usually worth the expense, because they enable the UAV, flying at over 60,000 feet, to get a sharp picture of all the territory it can see from that altitude. The B version is a lot more reliable. Early A models tended to fail and crash at the rate of once every thousand flight hours, mostly because of design flaws.
