Kolkata minority outfits want Pranab to cancel Bangladesh visit
KOLKATA: A dozen minority organizations in the city will hold a rally at the ShahidMinar ground on March 26 in protest against police action on agitators in Bangladesh.
Announcing this on Saturday, All Bengal Minority Youth Federation general secretary Mohammed Quamruzzaman said the protest was being delayed in view of the ongoing board examinations. At a press conference, Quamruzzaman demanded on behalf of these organizations that Indian President Pranab Mukherjee decline the hospitality of the Bangladesh government and cancel his imminent visit to Dhaka.
The Awami League government in Bangladesh was forcibly suppressing the voice of democracy to stay in power and trying to ban some opposition political parties, said Quamruzzaman. The movement at Shahbag had run out of steam while anti-government agitations were spreading across the country, he said, adding that "the conviction of Jamaat-e-Islami vice-president Delwar Hussain Sayedee came without sufficient evidence and the death sentence was vindictive".
This had brought the country on the verge of a civil war, said Quamruzzaman. "Till violations of human rights by the Bangladesh government are stopped, India should not have diplomatic relations with it," he said.
