Pranab Mukherjee invites Mamata Banerjee to dinner for Sheikh Hasina

Indian president Pranab Mukherjee has formally invited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to the ceremonial dinner he is hosting for Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Apr 7.

"A formal letter of invitation has been sent to the West Bengal chief minister from Rastrapati Bhavan," a source close to Mukherjee said.

The source said Mukherjee wants to bring Mamata face to face with PM Hasina to break the deadlock on the vexed issue of sharing Teesta's water.

PM Hasina is scheduled to arrive in Delhi on a three-day visit to India on April 7. The same day, the Indian president will host the dinner in her honour. Hasina will be staying in Rastrapati Bhavan during her time in Delhi, reports bdnews24.com.

It was not yet clear whether Mamata has accepted the invitation.

Sources in her party indicate that she would be willing to meet Hasina in Delhi if the Indian government involves West Bengal in the negotiations over Teesta.

The Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Gopal Bagley has said all stakeholders including West Bengal will be included in the Teesta negotiations.

But Mamata has alleged that has not been the case so far.

As India's foreign minister during the Congress-led UPA regime, President Mukherjee has detailed personal experience about the Teesta issue.

The Modi government is trying to break the deadlock on the issue by using his vast experience and intimate relations with both Mamata and Sheikh Hasina.

It may try bringing together chief ministers of other Indian states bordering Bangladesh to meet Sheikh Hasina during her visit to Delhi along with Mamata Banerjee.

Jamaatis want us to be in trouble with India and radicalize the country. This is how they want to legitimize their anti-liberation role in 1971.

However, a few bad people complain both in BD and India that Jamaatis regularly fill in the Bank accounts of Mamata Bannerji, so that she can keep on refusing to share Teesta water with BD. Jamaatis still do not want a free Bangladesh. They use all the evil ways to fuel trouble with India. They are pro-India.

This not so old report suggests China is a factor that Modi needs to consider.

BEIJING: Refuting reports of China joining the water wars between India and Pakistan by blocking a tributary of the Brahmaputra river, Chinese official media on Monday said that Beijing is ready to join a multilateral cooperation mechanism with India and Bangladesh to share the waters.

Relations between China and India should not be affected by “imaginary water war”, an article in the state-run Global Times said, adding that Beijing is unlikely to use Brahmaputra river water as a potential weapon.

It said China is willing to have multilateral cooperation with India and Bangladesh to share the waters. The proposal is significant as China has no water treaty with India to share the river waters.

“It is easy to understand the anger of Indian people as they read recent news reports saying China had blocked a tributary of the Brahmaputra river, which is a trans-boundary river flowing from southwest China’s Tibet into the northeastern Indian state of Assam and later into Bangladesh, serving as an important water source for the regions,” it said.
“The move by China to temporarily blockade the tributary to construct a dam sparked widespread concerns in India, but people in the downstream country may be ignoring one thing,” it said. “Frankly, there is no need for India to overreact to such projects, which aim to help with reasonable development and utilisation of water resources,” it said.

However, what is worrying is that some Indian media outlets linked the blockage with India’s recent water dispute with Pakistan, trying to create the false impression that China may be interested in taking part in the “so-called water war between the two South Asian countries to give Pakistan silent support,” the article stated
