India all set to test new short-range tactical missile

Prahaar' (to strike), a totally new quick-reaction, short-range tactical missile, which will fill the gap for such a battlefield weapon system in India's missile arsenal, is all set to be flight-tested on July 17.

This was stated here on Saturday by Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and Director General, Defence Research and Development Organisation, V.K. Saraswat after inaugurating a new facility of Analogic Controls India Ltd. (ACIL) that manufactures electronic systems for mission critical defence and space applications.

Talking to journalists, Dr. Saraswat said the 150 km-range missile would replace unguided rockets and “is going to be an excellent weapon.” It would bridge the gap between Pinaka, a 40-km range multi-barrel rocket system, and the 350-km Prithvi-II, which had been converted into a strategic missile. Unguided rockets of 90-km range had also been imported from Russia.

Dr. Saraswat said that at present the services did not have a weapon such as Prahaar. The missile would be equipped with omni-directional warheads and could be used for hitting both tactical and strategic targets. The road-mobile system could be pulled out for quick deployment with each launcher carrying six missiles. “With different types of warheads, you can have different types of missiles from the same launcher,” he added.

Stating that the DRDO-developed missile was cost-effective, Dr. Saraswat said that only a few would be required to cause devastation equivalent to that produced by several unguided rockets. Initially, the missile would be given to the Army and later to other services.

Replying to a question, he said India's longest range, surface-to-surface Agni-V missile would be flight-tested by the year-end as scheduled earlier.

Avinash Chander, Chief Controller, (Missile & Strategic Systems), DRDO, said the most “critical milestone' — the testing of three propulsion motors for the first, second and third stages of the missile — was completed.

Electronic systems

Earlier, inaugurating the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility of ACIL, Dr. Saraswat called for forging public-private partnerships for producing electronic systems, which were being imported. The new Electronics Development Policy would aim to bridge the technological gap and seek large participation of the private sector.

He said a low cost laptop being produced by the DRDO in partnership with IIT, Jodhpur, was expected to be unveiled by December.

T.V. Prasad, Chairman, ACIL, said the company was developing more than 50 components for various projects and intended to move towards high-end products.

Good way of procedding. It will also help in our cold start doctrain.
Prahaar can become a really techniqel masterpiece which will be suitable to use in case of surgical strikes. It can also operate as the answer for Hatf series missiles. Great work DRDO. Keep it up.

Good news. This missiles can be fired against field fortifications, artillery positions and with napalm or fuel air explosive can be deadly against incoming enemy troops. But DRDO now should develop a 300 mm version of Pinaka multi barrel rocket launchers with 160 km range and 300 kg warheads. These will be much more cost effective that Prahar and can be produced in massive quantity in lesser time.
REGARDS....

Prithvi is a disaster for Indian armed forces strategically. We should replace them as quickly as possible because they are too huge for a 300km range BM. Its too difficult to transfer them under the radar. Prithvi was our first so everybody understands it but now we need Prithvi NG which should be smaller, light weight and smarter or we should eliminate this missile from our arsenal.

Well I dont think so...Prithivi is a good weapon system....highly versatile and can carry a good payload.

Care to explain ??either you are not aware of what this can do or you are still on friday night hangover :what:

Prithvi is actualy one of most mobile, anti BMD counter measures featured and strategicaly important missile in Indian armed forces present in all services including army, airforce and navy.Actualy it's loved most by army for its precision, reliablity and verstality..

Is this an answer to Nasr tactical missile?? can some experts answer. This is not for trolling.

Actualy yes but as far as i know, the development of Prahaar has started 4years back and don't know about NASSAR developmental cycle..

Very Good Move, it will great advantage in high altitude to restrict any movement, destroying enemy bunkers and cutting supply line. A mobile system with 150 km range is defiant game changer in mountain warfare.

"Prahaar" - Strike ... name's very apt !

Way to go DRDO !!

It would nicely complement Prithvi along with Smerch / S-300 / Pinaka / Grad MBRL batteries in the battlefield.

Well its not about what you think, its what every defence analyst says. It is too huge to transfer and considering its short range we have to move it more in comparison to other Agni's. Due to this movement it can be very easily spotted. If you look at the other missiles in its category, they are compact and light. You cannot make out that a ballistic missile is being transferred.

Pandora yaar i didn't expected this from you...

What do you mean by mobile ? Its too bulky in its category of missiles and hence hard too transport and can be very easily spotted which i don't think any nation wants. Long range missiles can very easily be fired from deep inside our territory but missiles like Prithvi has to be moved closer to the border and considering its size it is strategically disadvantageous.
As far as anti BMD counter measure is concerned we don't need longer range missile for that purpose and thats why we used Prithvi as there was no other option in this category and Prithvi was in service long before it was decided to use it in BMD program . New Prithvi are smarter missiles which are being used in BMD countermeasure but for that purpose the size and weight of missile doesn't matter alot as we won't be moving those missiles here and there. But most of the Prithvi in our forces are Prithvi 1 and they are decent but accurate missiles. Prithvi 2 and 3 are good but even they have the problem of being too bulky.

A short range BM missile should be small and light and which should be easily transported without raising ears of our enemy because these missiles have to travel more in comparison to other longer BM.

Guys its not just my opinion but most of the defence analyst also thinks the same and if you will read it carefully you will also understand
