KARACHI: Inspector General (IG) Sindh Tuesday taking a departmental action suspended DSP Tando Muhammad Khan, Irfan Shah for taking no action while Pakistan People's Party candidate Waheeda Shah slapped an Assistant President Officer during by elections, Geo News reported.

DSP Aurngzeb Abbasi has been placed in Irfan Shah's position.

The PPP candidate Waheeda Shah had slapped the Assistant Presiding Officer, Shagufta Memon at a polling station in PS-53 Tando Muhammad Khan during by elections last month.

As the event unfolded, DSP Tando Muhammad Khan who stood right beside Waheeda Shah, did nothing to stop the PPP candidate and only looked on as a silent spectator.

not so fast... the chairman ECP and the Chief of Sindh ECP decided in favour of Waheeda Shah, but the other three went against her...

Secondly, appeal in SC would either dismiss the decision or sustain as supreme authority. the suo moto was only to compel the ECP to act.

The Kidnapping and conversion of Rinkle Kumari

Rinkle Kumari is a 17 year old Hindu girl from Mirpur Mathelo in Sindh, Pakistan. She was kidnapped on the 23rd of February, 2012 from her house by Naveed Shah and his gunmen.

Rinkle was taken to Barkandi Shareef a village near Mirpur Mathelo where a local Minister, named Mian Mithoo (From the PPP) conveyed to her she had to convert to Islam to save her parents life.

While this was taking place, Rinkle's family went to the police station to register a complaint which the police registered only after persuasion of five hours. The family was told the court would be held the next day, but they weren't told the right time. Then they were waiting at the court at Ghotki but when they came to know the court would be held in Mirpur Mathelo they rushed there. However they were not allowed to go in by Mian Mithoo's armed entourage.

In the court Rinkle denied converting and cried and begged to be allowed to go with her parents. However Mian Mithoo slapped her in front of the Judge who adjourned the court for two days. On 27th February the new judge gave a ruling in favour of Naveed Shah saying the only house of Rinkle is now Naveed Shah. He took her away to Barkandi Shareef then and married her.

This is how the Hindus suffer in Pakistan. Despite being a significantly richer community than the Muslims and better off than them there has been no let up in violence against Hindus. Rinkle's abduction and forced conversion needs to be condemned forcefully by Pakistanis.

ECP disqualifies Waheeda Shah for 2 years, declares election void


ISLAMABAD: Announcing a landmark verdict on Wednesday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified Pakistan People's Party's candidate Waheeda Shah for two years and declared her election on PS-53 Tando Muhammad Khan null and void.

The ECP had earlier reserved the judgment in the much talked-about case till Wednesday.

Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Hamid Ali Mirza chaired the proceedings while Election Commission Members Justice (retd) Riaz Kayani (Punjab), Justice (retd) Fazlur Rehman, Shahzad Akbar Khan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and Roshan Ali Essani were also part of the event.

Waheeda Shah had slapped a Presiding Officer Habiba Memon and Assistant Presiding Officer Shagufta Memon in a polling station of PS-53 Tando Muhammad Khan during by elections of last month in the presence of a DSP.

The video footage of the incident that was repeatedly played by news channels shocked the entire nation.

The issue was taken up by the ECP which announced its historic verdict today that is being hailed by all segments of the society including politicians, the civil society and human rights activists.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan also took suo motto notice of it and Waheeda Shah apologized for the shameful treatment she meted out to the officers of ECP. The case is still underway and it is yet to be seen what action the Supreme Court takes against her.

On Tuesday, Waheeda Shah did not turn up at the Election Commission Secretariat in spite of a summon served on her by the ECP. Her lawyer said his client's reaction was the result of a misunderstanding.

Ifran Shah, the DSP in whose presence Waheeda Shah slapped the polling officers in Tando Muhammad Khan was also suspended by the IG Sindh on Tuesday.

He was taken to task for taking no action and standing as a silent spectator as the incident unfolded in front of him.
