Pakistan People's Party (PPP) is making all-out efforts to woo Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for fielding a consensus candidate in the upcoming presidential elections. But even a joint candidate of opposition parties is unlikely to create any hurdle for PML-N presidential nominee from clinching the top constitutional position of the country.

Sources privy to the development told Business Recorder that former Justice Wajihuddin Ahmed may be a consensus candidate of opposition parties against PML-N nominee. President Asif Ali Zardari is not contesting the next presidential elections as the PPP is not a position to win these. The position of PML-N and its allies is very strong in the National Assembly as well as in Punjab and Balochistan Assemblies. However, the opposition parties are far ahead of the PML-N and its allies in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to party position and affiliations in the four provincial assemblies, the National Assembly and Senate, if all members cast their vote in accordance with party lines, no candidate will have the potential to create a hurdle in the way of the PML-N's presidential candidate. The Electoral College comprises 342 members of the National Assembly, 104 of the Senate, and members of four provincial assemblies.

As the Balochistan Assembly is the smallest house with total strength of 65 members, votes in the three other provincial assemblies are to be divided by 65 so 5.7 MPAs of Punjab, 2.58 of Sindh and 1.9 of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be equivalent to one vote. On the other hand, one-member-one-vote formula is applied in the National Assembly, the Senate and the Balochistan Assembly. In the National Assembly, the coalition comprising the PML-N, JUI-F, PML-F, PkMAP, NP and other smaller groups enjoys the support of 218 MNAs, compared to the opposition's 105.

In the Senate, the situation is reverse as the ruling coalition has 34 members, while the opposition parties have 67. The PPP is still the largest party with 39 members in the upper house. According to sources, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is considering the name of Wajihuddin as potential candidate for presidential election. However, final decision would be taken on the return of party chairman Imran Khan from England.

Sources said that the PTI would contact other opposition parties in an effort to solicit their support for Justice Wajihuddin. The Presidential Spokesman Senator Farhatullah Babar told Business Recorder that a meeting of PPP would be held soon to discuss the matter of presidential election and the party's future course of action in this regard. He said that if the PPP selects any name to contest presidential election, it would discuss it with other opposition parties.
