Portuguese Army plans to acquire new small arms

The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) is expected to issue a request for proposals (RfP) for new small arms for the Portuguese Army, a military source told Jane’s .

The NSPA is conducting procurement on behalf of the Portuguese Army under an agreement between the two parties.

The acquisition, worth up to EUR42.8 million (USD50.3 million), foresees the purchase by 2022 of 11,000 5.56x45 mm assault rifles, 300 7.62x51 mm assault rifles, 830 5.56x45 mm light machine guns, 320 7.62x51 mm light machine guns, 450 7.62x51 mm precision rifles, 1,700 grenade launchers, 380 shotguns, and 3,400 sights.

The project comes under the 'Protection and survivability of land forces' capability chapter of Portugal's Military Programming Law 2015-26.

The point is friend, would you be needing it ever? You are probably the most peaceful country today in Europe; tucked away facing the Atlantic Ocean and having no issues at all with your only neighbour Spain.

Many countries with big defence budgets would kill to be in your position of having no need to have a military at all.

Honestly, you could enter into an agreement with Spain & France to defend you and completely focus on just a modern police force.

Its a NATO member state. All members have to spend a certain amount of their annual budget (equivalent to 2% of GDP i think) per annum on their defence.

Was actually in Portugal a couple of weeks ago. Went to Batalha where they told many tales of your brotherly love with the Spaniards

Beautiful country though i must say. Covered most big cities between Evora and Porto. Even got to experience Sao Joao in Porto!

Good, I live near Porto!
Some people dont now that a small country like Portugal exist in the peninsula simply becouse we have been wining wars cince the Romans came (2000 years).
In Aljubarrota (near Batalha) we killed a complete generation of Spanish nobles during a cavalry scharge by the Spanish. They went against Portuguese Pikeman covered by British Longbowman. There is many blood from British brothers on my land too. We will be forever greatfull to them.
