Pope of the Vatican City is considered as the defender or patriach of the Christian world. It has nothing to do with what sect of Christianity you follow.
The same Vatican pope waged Crusade or holy war against Islamic Caliphate in the middle east and conquered Jerusalem in 1099 A.D. Back then the Byzantine Empire, which followed an entirely different branch of Christianity, created alliance with the Crusaders.
So as a thumb rule, the pope does not belong to any specific Christian sect.
The crusaders also sacked constantinople, a so called holy city to eastern christianity.
According to the wikipedia on catholic-protestant relations for example it seems that the pope at the time during the middle ages was primarily motivated in fighting protestantism, so your wrong. The Pope is the head of the catholic church first and foremost, which is why there is an orthodox pope, a coptic pope, and a palmarian pope.
