Poll rigging: Role of ex-CJP, media house be probed, says Imran

Reiterating his claim that the May 2013 general elections were massively rigged, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday demanded a probe into the shady role of former chief justice, returning officers and a media group.

“A probe should be launched into the address of the former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to the Returning Officers and the role of a TV channel, which had announced partial election results and started campaigning in favour of a party,” Imran said.

The PTI chief was briefing the media about the PTI’s plan to launch a protest movement against the alleged rigging on the completion of one year since the election.

“Those who have a hand in the massive poll rigging including the former chief justice of Pakistan would be exposed,” he maintained.

Imran said a massive protest movement will be launched from May 11, adding that during the one year, no major complaint against the election rigging was addressed by the election tribunals.

He said the PTI had accepted the 2013 election for the sake of continuation and strengthening of democracy, but his party would never spare those who were instrumental in rigging the elections.

“We will expose those actors, who have played a role in poll manipulation,” he added.

He slammed the role of former CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry, who did not entertain the PTI petition about verification of fingerprints in four constituencies.

“The former CJ gave less importance to such a national issue, but took suo motu notices on petty things,” he said.

He also lambasted the government for appointing as chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board a person, who, according to him, was largely instrumental in manipulating the polls in the largest province of the country.

Imran and his lawyer were in court before the allotted time with the written two-paragraph reply.

In his reply he stated that he did not use the word “shameful” for the judiciary, rather for the presiding officer in the election process.

“Can such words be used for the judiciary?” asked Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had earlier asked during the hearing.

CJ Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry added that since Imran is a leader and public figure, such words and statements are not expected from him.

Lawyer Hamid Khan said Imran had complaints regarding the Election Commission of Pakistan however Imran holds no disrespect for the court or the judiciary.
