Which and why? Personally, I like Iran now because Iran is self sufficient and make world class military hardware.

Iran now because its the only country that counters wahhabism and Saudi infuence in the region plus like you mentioned self sufficient economy and world class millitary hardware sadly I dont agree with all the social policies of the current regime but the Shah was overated he enriched the elite in Tehran and bigger cities while rest of the country was poor at least the current Iranian regime spreads the oil wealth to most of its people.I wish the US would ditch the wahhabi regime in KSA but it will never happen because of Israeli lobby in the US and shared geo strategic areas the KSA,USA and Israel all agree on

I recently had two days of debates over dinner and drinks (dark beer) with an Iranian expat.

He was really negative about the country and the people. To the extent I was actually getting offended ...

He was referring to some main opposition to the Mullas that was even worse - a Islamic communist radical group (forget the name) @jamahir

Corruption.

And he called the people pussies multiple times ....

Before 1979. I had bunch of Iranian friends [from Iran] at university and can only look back with sadness. Little did I know that what 1979 would bring. Pakistan would have been 10 times better if we had Shah still in Iran. What a tragedy for our region. 1979 put to death to any chance of the emergence of a neo-ummate in West Asia where Pakistan would have been the eastern flank of this economic/military power - Asian NATO.
