Politician calls Islam 'cult': Church to burn Quran

Would you burn any of these holy texts to make a point about your own faith? A Florida church claims the Bible commands it to burn the Quran to win Muslim converts.

Tennessee Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, lagging in polls in the Republican gubernatorial primary race, according to Talking Points Memo, says he's not sure if Constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion apply to Islam, since, he says, Islam may be a cult, not actually a religion.

Now, you could even argue whether being a Muslim is actually a religion, or is it a nationality, way of life, cult whatever you want to call it.

Ramsey did not dispute the video of his remarks posted at TPM and answered its request for comment with an email:

My concern is that far too much of Islam has come to resemble a violent political philosophy more than peace-loving religion. It's time for American Muslims who love this country to publicly renounce violent jihadism and to drum those who seek to do America harm out of their faith community.

So, are the vast majority of U.S. pastors who would never dream of burning a Quran going to call out the Dove World Outreach Center?

That's the Florida church, which calls itself "a New Testament, Charismatic, Non-Denominational Church that believes in the whole Bible," which posted a roadside sign this month, "Islam is of the Devil" and has now stepped up its campaign against Islam.

According to Religion News Service, the church is planning "International Burn A Quran Day," on the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks this year -- smack during Eid al-Fitr, the Islamic feast days at the conclusion of the Ramadan fast.

The Friendly Atheist blogger Hemant Mehta called up Jones to ask what's behind the burn. Jones tells him this is not about hate but about Christian truth -- and bringing Muslims to convert. Says Jones:

We love the ******* and hope that they would come to true salvation. What we are attacking is Islam, the religion, and Sharia law, the political system.

Brent Michael Dykes, blogging at Yahoo's The Upshot, observes Christians might be surprised to discover the Quran mentions Jesus 25 times and considers him a prophet, great spiritual leader and teacher. This also adds fuel to the anti-Islamic fires evident at mosque-building protests in New York this month. And Ramsey may have been playing to the crowd opposing a new Islamic center planned for Murfreesboro, Tenn., according to TPM.

Is hate a way to show love? Do you think anyone will be drawn to accept Jones' version of Christianity? Should the government be evaluating the validity of religions?

Fla. church plans to burn Qurans on 9/11 anniversary

(RNS) A Florida church with "Islam is of the devil" signs in its front lawn plans to host an "International Burn A Quran Day," on the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks this year.

The Dove World Outreach Center, a non-denominational church in Gainesville, has marked the date in previous years with protests against Islam. The church holds protests on other issues, such as homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and abortion.

Pastor Terry Jones said members of the church plan to be at the Gainesville City Hall on Aug. 2 to protest the election of the city's openly gay mayor. Church-state groups had previously accused the church of illegal politicking for its "No Homo Mayor" signs.

Jones, who is also the author of a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," said protests are key to the mission of his church.

"We feel, as Christians, one of our jobs is to warn," said Jones.
The goal of these and other protests are to give Muslims an opportunity to convert, he said.

In response to the posting of the event on Facebook a little more than a week ago, Jones said that people have been mailing Qurans to the church to burn. He said organizers got the idea, in part, from another Facebook page, called "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day."

Sept. 11 will fall during the Eid al-Fitr holiday this year, when Muslims mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Local Muslims are planning to use the feast as an opportunity to share Islamic traditions and Qurans with the church members and the wider community.

"We don't want to do anything that would be reactive," said Ramzy Kilic, communications director of the Tampa Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

On May 10, a pipe bomb exploded in the Islamic Center of Northwest Florida in Jacksonville. No worshippers were hurt, but Kilic said the planned burning of Qurans could escalate tensions in the area.

Lol burn an Quran day? I would want to know when that happening and give lead as an answer. And iam dead serious

they are false but technically not cults. cult involves following, killing and dying for what one guy said. this is the last off topic post i'll make.

i don't intend to troll.

Do you have any idea what is the meaning of cult... or you are just... trolling with your hate...

The word cult pejoratively refers to a group whose beliefs or practices are reasonably considered strange.[1] The word originally denoted a system of ritual practices. The narrower, derogatory sense of the word is a product of the 20th century, especially since the 1980s, and is considered subjective, and is a result of the anti-cult movement, which uses the word in reference to groups seen as authoritarian, exploitative and possibly dangerous. The word implies a group which is a minority in society.

US church to burn Quran on Sept 11: report

Updated at: 1330 PST, Saturday, July 31, 2010 ShareThis story

NEW YORK: A church in Florida, US, is reportedly planning to host an "International Burn a Quran Day" on the anniversary of the Sep 11, 2001, terror attack, a move that has been condemned by many Christians and Muslims.

The Dove World Outreach Centre in Gainesville, Florida, would host the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam, which it calls a "deceptive religion" and "of the devil".

The church is promoting the event on its website and Facebook page and has invited Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at its premises from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," church pastor Terry Jones was quoted as saying by the US news channel.

The Facebook page has more than 1,600 fans. "Eternal fire is the only destination the Quran can lead people to, so we want to put the Quran in its place - the fire!" the page says.

Jones also said he has written a book titled "Islam is of the Devil", and that the church sells coffee mugs and shirts featuring the phrase.

Muslim and Christian groups have, meanwhile, launched a protest against the event

Religious extremist exsist everywhere and they are no shy to jump on popularity train. Himself is a contradiction in attempt to start a new cult..they like to provoke then cry on cosequences with "i told ya so" presumptions.

Commercial gain i say?? The churches unlike mosques in USA work on the principle of capitalism. They are beside religious duties are also responsible for raising finances for their huge employment base of religious nuts.

what can i say. both islam and christianity are obviously cults.

Hanuman is also a cult..the monkeys are ashamed of him.

Destroy all religious books and there is only book which will survive and that is the holy Quran and this is a proof of it being the word of God.

We have millions of Hufaaz who will keep it alive , Islam has no Ending for those who want to end it rather they will end up converting to Islam.
