A plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski has crashed near a Russian airport, officials say.

Russian media reported that 87 people were killed in the crash near Smolensk, and a regional governor was quoted as saying there were no survivors.

Polish officials said Mr Kaczynski was on board along with his wife Maria and several senior government figures.

They were in Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, when Soviets killed thousands of Poles.

The Russian emergencies ministry told Itar-Tass news agency the plane crashed at 1056 Moscow time (0656 GMT).

Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said it had been flying from Moscow to Smolensk, but had no details on the identities of those killed.

Smolensk regional governor Sergei Antufiev told Russian TV that no-one had survived.

"As it was preparing for landing, the Polish president's aircraft did not make it to the landing strip," he said.

"According to preliminary reports, it got caught up in the tops of trees, fell to the ground and broke up into pieces. There are no survivors in that crash.

"We are clarifying how many people there were in the [Polish] delegation. According to preliminary reports, 85 members of the delegation and the crew."

The Polish Foreign Ministry said the president and his wife were aboard the plane.

Central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek was also said to have been on board.

SMOLENSK, RUSSIA: A plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife from Warsaw has crashed on approach to Smolensk airport in western Russia, a Polish government official at the airport told Reuters on Saturday.

There were no survivors in the crash, said the regional governor of Smolensk where it happened.

Russian news agencies reported 87 people died in the crash, citing the Russian Emergencies Ministry. They said the plane was a Tupolev Tu-154.

The Polish central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek was also on board the plane, the bank's press office told Reuters.

The crash occurred about 1.5 km from Smolensk airport in foggy conditions. "It clipped the tops of the trees, crashed down and broke into pieces," the governor of the Smolensk region, Sergei Antufiev, told Russia-24 television news network by telephone.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski dies in plane crash in SW Russia

An passenger plane en route from Warsaw to Smolensk on Saturday crashed during landing in heavy fog in southwest Russia, killing all passengers on board, including Polish President Lech Kaczynski.

According to a Russian Investigative Committee, Vladimir Markin, there were 132 people on board the aircraft.

"On Saturday in the Pechorsk district of the Smolensk region, the Polish president's Tu-154 crashed during landing in heavy fog at Severny Airport. There were 132 people on board, including the president and his wife," Markin said.

He said the exact number of those killed on board the plane is being determined.

Earlier it was reported that 87 people were on board.

I have no doubt Russia is behind this.AFAIK this guy was very close to USA.Looks like Russians have started showing some spine now.They have done this kind of acts before so i would not be surprised if they've done it again but it is in interest of Pakistan that things heat up between US and RF.

Totally agree. Add the below to the list...

- Geithner visits India and then makes an unscheduled landing in Beijing and Yuan devaluation is expected/Iran sanctions agreed...ie China and US have made up
- Nuke policy changes in US
- Iran makes better centrifuges
- Israel cancels trip to Washington DC to attend the nuke summit
- China makes token gestures to India (when Krishna visited China)
- Indian govt internally divided on many issues eg RTI act
- Pak passing laws to curtail power of Zardari
- US passes healthcare bill
etc etc etc...the world is changing and fast...

Why is it good for Pakistan? Would'nt Russian pressure on the west and south force US to stay in Afghanistan longer, which suits India fine?

Ofcourse, it might not suit either India or Pakistan or both when we are asked to rollback nuke program in two days time. What the heck atleast on one issue we are on the same page...we will NOT agree to rollbacks on Nukes !!!
