Khaleda lying: ISPR
Sun, Nov 14th, 2010 2:19 pm
Dhaka, Nov 14 (bdnews24.com) Refuting Khaleda Zia's allegations, the military has claimed that she left the cantonment of her own volition.
Referring to the BNP chief's statements of Saturday, the military's public relations (ISPR) director termed them 'deceitful, fabricated and ill-motivated'.
ISPR director Shahinul Islam also stated in a press conference on Sunday that the leader of the opposition had been extremely abusive towards the military personnel as she left her residence on 6 Mainul Road in Dhaka Cantonment.
According to the military's press release of Saturday, as well as Islam's claim at the briefing, Khaleda had called the army men 'national enemies' as she was made to leave.
Shahinul Islam also claimed that the BNP chief kept threatening the army personnel present at her house on Saturday as the premises were being evacuated. She had apparently threatened to sack everyone there when she returned to power.
The cantonment board initiated to vacate the Shaheed Mainul Road residence after the High Court deadline ended on Nov 12, he claimed. The opposition leader left her house at about 3:15pm on Saturday for her Gulshan office.
A tearful Khaleda Zia accused the military of dragging her out of the house during a press conference on Saturday evening refuting the military's repeated claim that Khaleda had willingly left her house.
The military press release stated that Khaleda appeared 'unwilling' to hasten her departure. It said she took all the time in the world to get ready. "She began to act up rather badly, when at one point when two policewomen knocked on her window," it reads.
The statement goes on, "She didn't even hesitate to call the military men 'ungrateful dogs' and 'national enemy'."
Islam added in the press conference, reading out from the press release, that Khaleda had yelled at them, "I'm marking everyone. Everyone will be sacked once I return to power."
However, Khaleda Zia had accused the military of breaking down her bedroom door and dragging her out on Saturday's press conference.
In support of its original claim that Khaleda had vacated her house willingly, the ISPR director said that the cantonment officials had gone to the house at 8am. "She could have been dragged out right then, if she were actually forced out."
"But the fact is that she left the cantonment residence in her own car at 3:15pm. This is proof enough of her leaving the house willingly."
"Her employees packed 10 bags and four cartons of household goods. She also inspected the rooms of the house to see whether everything was sorted out," said Shahinul.
The military statement claimed that presence of eight vehicles of the latest models and 67 helping hands in the house where only one family resided are clear signs of her luxurious life.
The cantonment house is currently under police custody, it said.
The 2.72-acre plot was originally the official residence of the army's deputy chief of staff, a position held by Ziaur Rahman, who later became army chief and then president.
Former military dictator H M Ershad, who later became president, allotted the house to Khaleda and her two sons following the assassination of Ziaur Rahman, in a military coup on May 30 in 1981.
His widow Khaleda was given another house in Gulshan in addition to the cantonment house, where the family has been living since 1972.
The Directorate of Military Lands and Cantonments handed a notice on Apr 20 last year asking the BNP chief to vacate her cantonment residence.
Khaleda filed a petition with the High Court challenging legality of the government notice asking her to leave the house within 15 days.
The government maintained its stand with two separate notices on May 7 and May 24.
On May 27 last year, the court stayed the notices for three months after the initial hearing.
The final hearing started on June 6 the same year. On Aug 23, the court asked the government to submit all files in relation to the lease of the cantonment house.
The government gave a legal notice to Khaleda for a number of anomalies regarding the allotment within the military zone.
The allegations and irregularities for which the notice was issued include 1) Khaleda has been carrying out political activities from the house which goes against a condition of the allotment 2) One cannot get allotment of two government houses in the capital 3) A civilian cannot get a residence lease inside a cantonment.
The government also alleged that unauthorised changes and extensions were made to the building violating the code of conduct in the military area.
