LAKKI MARWAT: The police arrested a wanted militant of the outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from a cattle market in Naurang town.
Addressing a press conference here Friday, the District Police Officer (DPO) Ismail Kharak said that acting on a tip-off the policemen in plainclothes reached the cattle market and arrested militant commander Muhammad Nasir.
Nasir, whose codename is Haroon, was produced before the media during the press conference.Flanked by SP Investigation Muhammad Siddiq Khan, the DPO said the law-enforcers had also seized a hand-grenade, a pistol and several bullets from him. The commandos of the Elite Force and Anti-Terrorist Squad stood guard during the press conference to deal with any emergency.
DPO Ismail Kharak termed the arrest of TTP commander a great achievement and said it had helped the police break the network of terrorists in the district.“Nasir belongs to Mamakhel village of Naurang tehsil. He did F Sc from a local college and joined the TTP’s Shah Hasankhel chapter headed by Qari Munawar, to take part in the Afghan jihad,” he said.
He said the apprehended militant had spent several days at a training centre in Paktia province in Afghanistan. He said the TTP Shah Hasankhel commander Qari Munawar used to task him with carrying out bomb blasts and indulge in extortion activities in Lakki Marwat district.
The police official said Nasir and his TTP men were involved in bomb attacks at the hujra and residence of former Member National Assembly Naseer Muhammad Khan and Awami National Party district president Sadruddin Marwat and at the office of Awami National Party in Naurang.
“He also used explosives to blast the Rehman Medical Complex and a petrol pump in Naurang town,” the DPO added. “During preliminary investigation, the militant confessed that he got training of bomb-making and knew how to use light and heavy weapons,” he said.Ismail Kharak added that more arrests would soon be made to eliminate the gang involved in extortion of money and bomb blasts.
