Pole footage shows Memphis police holding up Nichols as officer punches him

I am sitting in California and thinking what the hell is going on. US can send a man on the moon but can't fix the daily traffic jams and slaughter on the streets. Half Moon bay is like 40 mins and LA about 4 hours from me and San Francisco about 50 Mins. Seems to be a war between the Police, the criminals and the collateral damage are the people.

Quite true indeed. But it seems the mass shooters don't care if they are White, black, yellow or brown they will shoot to kill for the silliest reasons.
Police work is hard work, especially with criminals highly likely to be armed. It’s a highly stressful job, and one bad mistake in an otherwise flawless career can tarnish not just one’s reputation but his or her entire police department, bringing the wrath of the entire nation.

Having said that, many people are not cut out to be police. Psychological exams should be done every so often to weed out people unfit for the highly stressful job. Police unions would naturally try to prevent their officers from getting fired, but legislation and funding (into mental health care, drug rehab, homeless services) has to be put in place to decrease the likelihood of these incidents.

For police arriving in squad cars, better armored vehicles equipped with racing drone UAVs (equipped with speakers and cameras) maybe necessary, in a world with so many guns, to make first contact with civilians.

Quite true. My daughter did a police community course with Redwood City Police force, where they tell/introduce/train members of the community about the police. She had the typical stereotypical view of the police when she went in and came out with a completely different view. Towards the end of the course they actually sat in with the police officers and went to live incidents. She said it was so frightening , the going into the unknown of violent incidents, the cops not knowing if they were going to make it out alive. The cops were basically putting their lives on the line for the community and were humans like everyone else. This was in an affluent area where there is little crime so you can imagine the inner city areas or gang land areas where there are high levels of violent crimes. In a country where there are more guns than people the police are laying down their lives on every call and it is like Russian Roulette.

It seems to me there are two issues here of action and reaction. A hostile , resistive and noncompliant community and an aggressive , finger on trigger police force. There needs to be change in behaviour and attitude from both sides and they need to meet in the middle. There needs to be community lessons in elementary schools right up to high schools taught by active police service men where they teach kids how to behave and respond to the police and the police can love the community instead of treating them like the enemy. Every time I have been stopped by the police in the UK and US it is my politeness and good manners and civil greeting that makes them feel at ease and makes it into a jovial interaction. Why some community members confront, disobey and become noncompliant needs to be looked into and the officers trained to deal with it in a de-escalatory manner. The whole thing with Nichols started when he refused to obey simple police instructions which challenged the adrenalin pumped officers who wanted to show him who is the boss. The officers did what they were hired to do to enforce the law albeit they did it brutally.

There has got to be a better way to take down a person they are confronting without it escalating to involving having to kick someone.

New techniques along with the taser need to be utilized. The goal should be stunning a person, long enough time to allow police to handcuff them.

Also, people get frustrated when confronted by police officers over them going about their normal day. Every bad story leads to more people not trusting police and the cycle of non-compliance just continuing.
