Poland develops DragonFly combat unmanned quadrocopter

WB Electronics S.A., the continuator of technological transformation in the Polish army and the defence sector, has developed new DragonFly combat unmanned quadrocopter.

The DragonFly micro unmanned quadrocopter designed in order to support the following combat operations, depending on the payload in use:

1. Surveillance, detection, recognition and identification of the objects of interest (EO/IR payload GS9),
2. Detection and strike against the enemy personnel (EO-fragmentation charge warhead),
3. Detection and strike against the enemy’s light armored vehicles (EO-linear cumulative charge warhead).

The DragonFly drone had a speed of 54 km/h and could carry a payload of 1.5 kg to a range of 10 km with an endurance of 20 minutes.

The payloads are interchangeable by sharing common interfaces. The DragonFly combat unmanned quadrocopter can be operated as an autonomous and independent system, being transported by the army or special forces troops.

The system has also the capability of being installed onboard the military vehicles, such us the terrain vehicle or armored personnel carrier. The subsystem as the Ground Control Station or Ground Data Terminal can be seamlessly integrated with the vehicle’s onboard installation making it a part of the system.

The warheads installed onboard DragonFly quadrocopter were designed and manufactured by Military Armament Institute (Poland) in partnership with WB Electronics S.A.

The DragonFly quadrocopter , in the combat mission is an one-time, expendable solution. On the other hand, equipped with the EO/IR payload can be recovered using deep-stall landing.

There is a special guidance tool facilitating the target aiming phase when the warhead is in ARMED mode.

I don't think this capability on this little thing will bring any degree of lethality better then a grenade .... ??

only advantage I can understand is the range & endurance, but it should cost more; secondly I find it difficult to understand that Why one would like to put this thing in test to take down few soldiers in a small post or a bunker from 10 KM distance when other option are available ... ??

In short I find it diffficult to understand operational use of this armed system on practical grounds ... would be thankful if someone can help ...

Yup, it's basically a flying grenade. But here's what it can do.

Quadcopters like this are small, hard to notice and relatively quiet, especially militarized versions. A good guerilla warfare weapon as I see it.

The craft is starting to make its presence in the Polish Territorial Defense Group, which is basically a guerilla paramilitary unit, but in the photo above it's being used by Polish Special Forces, and like with guerilla tactics, I think it's a great piece of kit for special operators.
