What's new

POF and Italy have signed defence cooperation agreement.

@Horus @Arsalan I recall Brian Cloughley - retired Australian defence attache to Pakistan - saying that POF has two programs it needs to get done: (1) a new standard issue rifle for the Army and (2) upgrading POF's facilities such that it can actually produce a that new rifle efficiently. In the case of this MoU, it could very well be for (2) - i.e. upgrading POF - and not necessarily for the ARX-200.

.
As Quwa mentioned, one aspect for this MoU might be to upgrade POF's facilities. One of the major obstacles the factory was facing, according to their annual report last year, was the reluctance of Western countries to share cutting edge manufacturing technologies.

.
Cutting edge manufacturing technologies are the need of the hour. Pakistan should get them one way or the other to stay up to date in defence production.

My information suggests that POF wants to make its own Assault Rifle ....... with due apologies to those who have invested an arm and a leg to have their assault rifles tested recently.

That could be a choice; it isn't impossible - hire overseas consultants, upgrade the facilities, etc. However, I think the final choice will be based upon multiple factors, not least the willingness of the vendor (or lack thereof) to provide offsets in the form of buying from POF (e.g. gun parts, ammunition, etc).

It surely is, the only cause of concern for some friends is that is Italians are upgrading the facility, wont there gun be a priority as well? :) For me, the answer to this is NO. Also i still do not see us producing over 500000 guns in one go for the whole military. To start with, it will be a few thousand units to equip selected units and then we will go from there. With guns operational, we may well see some changes and modifications as the project progresses. Any chance the Italians are here to exploit that with FN SCAR reportedly leading the trails. I mean, with there "facility upgrades" they will try to remain in the loop in case some thing happens when POF actually do start production. A far fetched theory but we know how far the Europeans can go when it comes to business interests.

Maybe bvr related stuff
not related

. . . .
Just kidding Mr. Zarvan is quite a big fan and staunch supporter of new Guns for P.A :D
That is what i was referring too :P

Let me quickly say again that:

EVERY MOU SIGNING DO NOT MEANS WEAPON PROCUREMENT,,

but it might already be too late @Maj.Osmani
The MOU (not a deal) seems to be more about general facility upgrades rather then procurement related.
