PNS Baber Attacked by Somali Pirate

You guys need to understand the background. Decades ago you had best fishing grounds near Ethiopia. Then it was pretty much a dump place for highly chemical and nuclear waste (Italy was the biggest party in that). All fish is gone and the former fishermen have become pirates to get some food. It worked in that past but these people turned it into criminal job. Now you have extremely rich pirates using poor fishermen to rob rich westerners that destroyed the their fishing grounds. We should refrain from calling others this or that but understand the situation first.

very informtive, my sympathies with them, but why do they arrest already 3rd world countries like india, pak, hijack america nd westerns only

PN has already had one past encounter with the pirates and it was dealt with efficiently in textbook fashion.....

it is good that PN will be part of the international effort to combat this cancer in the Indian Ocean/Arabian Sea/Gulf of Aden waters. The pirates are a troublesome foe for the entire civilized world --as much of our merchandise and supplies go through these routes.

crush them.....

many of the pirates grievences are genuine ones

VERY genuine ones...they basically were saying -- ''hey...you mess and ruin our livelihoods, so we will ''tax'' you by robbing you of some of your wealth since you are damaging our's''

this is no way to take revenge or show a grievences....they are THIEVES. Stealing is a crime. Murder, extortion, kidnapping -- these are CRIMES. You cannot sympathise with people who turn to life of crime and illicit activity.

moral should always preceed material

i agree but sometimes moral/ideals cant satisfy hunger....
they started this whole thing to protect their fishing industries but now it turned into something else.

I'm confused, is this a suicide type assault? I just can't see pirates engaging a large frigate with assault rifles and RPG's.

If they hit effectively with an RPG at the level of the Plimsoll line, then any ship will keel.

well they arent poor, starving rag-tag guys now!!!

just off that Saudi oil tanker a few months back they made over $1.5 million in untaxed cash (ransom)!!!

they are more sophisticated now, more organized, very well equipped, heavily armed. . .

This is true. They took up arms to attack these people that were dumping the crap on their space. Later they found out how to make money through terrorism. These pirates were created by the Europeans.

Till last news, navy commandos had the better of them, pirates had many casualties so they scooted. No casualty on PN side. Now PNS Babar along with Suez are on their way to Oman.

KARACHI: MV-Suez, the cargo ship which was released by Somali pirates along with its crew earlier in the week after 10 months in captivity had once again come under attack on Thursday.

According to Express 24/7 correspondent, Sabin Agha, the ship, was heading towards Oman to make port when it came under attack from pirates.

A Pakistan Navy spokesperson told The Express Tribune that all reports of a navy vessel coming under attack were unconfirmed at this point. He said that at this point he can only say that navy ships are safe and sound and operating as routine.

The ship, which is being escorted by Pakistani warship, PNS Babar (Type 21 frigate), had already come under attack on Wednesday, June 15, a day after pirates released the ship and its crew.

Wasi Hasan, the ships Pakistani captain while talking to NDTV said that the crew may have to abandon the ship and hitch a ride with the PNS Babar. “The boiler in the engine room is not working, so our speed has slowed down from 15 knots to 8 knots.” He also said that there is eight tons of diesel left on board, not enough to get the Suez to the port of Salalah in Oman.

All crew is reported to be safe.

The Express Tribune understands that pirates are present in the sector from which MV-Suez is being escorted through.

After its release, PNS Babar had been providing escort to the vessel. Sailors along with Navy commandos were also on board the ship to deal with any eventuality. A navy helicopter also flies over the ship to provide close air support.

The MV Suez, owned by an Egyptian company, had been first boarded by Somali pirates in August 2010, while passing through the Gulf of Aden. Its crew of 22 people were finally released on June 14, after payments of $2.1 million were made to the hostage takers.

Once the ship makes port, the crew, comprising four Pakistanis, six Indians, one Sri Lankan and 11 Egyptians will be able to fly back to their respective countries.

PN did the right thing by sending the ship otherwise that cargo ship would have been in deep shyt by now.

well there are civilized and decent ways to approach this (legitimate) concern.......there are international bodies, even after negotiations and making a good case -- there could be a diplomatic way to counter the pollution and other drawbacks of being along the shipping route

this is what governments do..

and Somalia hasnt has a Goddam government in power to run the country since 1991.

No government in over 20 years!!
