PMO replies to Washington Post, slams journalist

response to the letter from Simon Denyer, author of the article :

Thanks for your comments. I wanted to respond point-by-point:

— I requested an interview with the PM on three occasions, and also with T.K.A Nair, Advisor to the Prime Minister, and with Pulok Chatterji, Principal Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office. Those requests were either ignored or declined.

— When I made my final request for an interview with the PM in July, I was told on July 30 “The PM has declined all interview requests till the Monsoon session is over.” At that stage the current session of parliament (known as the Monsoon session) of parliament had not even begun. There was no mention of the possibility of an interview afterwards. In any case my story touches on the fact that parliament has been adjourned every day throughout the current session by opposition calls for the PM to resign, which is a story I felt should be told, interview or not.

Indeed, we remain extremely interested in speaking to the prime minister.

— My apology was for the fact that the website was down and the PM’s office could not post a reply directly. As soon as the problem was fixed, I informed them. I stand by the story.

— I spoke to Dr Baru personally on the telephone during the reporting for the story. He confirmed that these sentiments were accurate.

Regards,

Simon Denyer

The Indian PMO should know first that what is Journalism, an article is a personal opinion based on observations and caluculation of development viz viz the subject therefore an article never never i repeat never needs to fulfill the criteria of presenting both versions i.e of pro- and against.

ONLY a NEWS ITEM, onspot reporting need mentioning of versions from both parties .
Right said, Even i think so. How this news was more than just a opinion. Fact is for Indian media whatever westermedia says is a ghospel world. For us BBC,CNN are role models. We cant take the news from RT or other source. So whatever comes in western news carries more important than Indian news.

PMO and Indian media should have ignored this.

In my personal opinion Indian media always tends to over-react by creating hype over petty issues to make these look like giants for getting attention of not only common Indians but also create a false sense of superiority as if the foreign media has no right to criticise Indians even if your own locals call Sonia, MMS, and Rajev Gandhi many abusive names

So, You think BJP will bring black money?
May be karnataka BJP candidates money itself if they bring back it is enough.
In karnataka so many BJP MLA were in jail. And BJP high command dont even have power ro control yeddis.
In Bellari they proved that only because of reddys money they won.

BJP and Congress not different in crrption.

I think communists in center are less currpt. than others

wow.. atleast we know where our leader's priorities lie. They are more worried about their image outside India than inside. It's the people of India & Indian media our PM needs to be conscious & touchy about. Not western media & western audience...

It's one thing for a media outlet to criticize its own government but it's total out of line for it to criticize another one in which it has no stake in it, unless the head of that government is a tyrant and commits all kind of atrocities. IMO it fails its duty of abiding to international etiquette, especially in this case where the head of state is an elected official- by criticizing him it criticizes the whole people.

I don't agree.

International protocols and etiquette applies primarily to diplomats, to some extent to responsible administrators with a public interface. Journalists and the press have the duty to report what is happening, as well as, and distinguishable from, why it is happening. Just as Indian journalists would be well within their rights to criticize the government, and do so mercilessly, other journalists have the same right, as they perform the same role.

A lack of understanding of this has in the past led to tremendous unhappiness and even ill-will among foreign officials from states which have a 'directed' model of responsibility and legitimacy. The Indian press has been criticised for sensationalism, for exaggerating minor issues and projecting them as major, and picking on negative aspects of a relationship at the cost of positive aspects. It has earned this criticism due to its refusal to go by the Indian government's account of its dealings with a foreign power, but has usually chosen to form its own opinion. While there is no doubt that the tone tends to get shrill at times, while there is no doubt that these accounts get under the skin of the victim, it is essential for the freedom of the press, our simulation of the freedom of speech, that the press should operate with the utmost freedom. This includes criticizing public officials.

Once we give this freedom to our own journalists, it becomes difficult to threaten and browbeat others.

While your comment was balanced and responsible, it does not reflect the reality of either Indian or American political life, and the relationship politicians have with journalists and the press.

u r wrong at this, India is the world's biggest democracy & US is the world's oldest democracy. What's the sense of a democracy if media cannot criticize the policies it sees as wrong & thinks there should be a change for the betterment of the society at large, it may be it's own govt. or govt. of another country, at last we are citizen of this world & with Globalization & world becoming flat whatever happens in India effects US & vice versa, Indian media has time & again criticize the US govt. & it's policies, not only media PM Manmohan Singh himself said once that the US attack on Iraq was wrong & should not have happened & US being a democracy took that criticism so why India should raise it tempers when US media criticize it's govt. ??

Thats what I was saying in a post a few months ago, India is receiving increased amount of negative press from the West.

.
It seems that the people at PMO are spending their full time monitorin news, tweets, facebook posts and blogs rather than running the administration.
