PML-N to add 2000MW by resuming work on abandoned power plants

They didn't say what fuel these power plants will be burning?
power production by burning oil is very expensive..
same problem wipl arise as before....people won't be able to pay bills......and circular debt will grind everything to halt...

That is a very good point.

N league is constantly harping about these 2 projects but till now no clarification that on which source they will run on.. @Tiger Awan can help maybe.

Pakistan intends to import coal from China instead of importing the expensive oil from other countries. This will be a short term relief and hopefully it will buy enough time for the government to start the ball rolling and restart all other plants that are currently shutdown/stopped.

Iran’s investment in energy sector to be welcomed: Shahbaz

LAHORE: Chief Minister-designate Shahbaz Sharif said Sunday that strengthening ties with neighbouring countries forms the basis of the PML-N’s foreign policy.

“Iran is not only our neighbour, it is also one of our closest friends and it has always stood by Pakistan in the testing times,” he said during a meeting with Iranian Ambassador Alireza Haghighian.

Shahbaz said that unrest and terrorism posed a hurdle to the region’s progress and countries in the region must work together to improve the situation. “I believe Iran can play a vital role in this regard,” he said.

He said that brotherly ties between the two countries must be transformed into an economic relationship. “We will welcome Iran’s investment in energy and other sectors in Punjab,” he said. The Iranian ambassador assured Shahbaz of Iran’s cooperation in energy sector and said Tehran could help Punjab generate 2,000MW of electricity if some hurdles were removed.

Earlier, speaking to the media after a meeting with the People’s Muslim League chief Arbab Ghulam Rahim, the CM-designate said that leaders and political parties from across the country were joining the PML-N and “This is due to the prudent policies of Nawaz Sharif.” He added that Arbab Ghulam Rahim could form an effective opposition in Sindh which would keep a check on the performance of the provincial government.

From what I've heard in other threads- a lack of capacity is not the issue but wide-spread theft of electricity, high costs of power leading to low revenue for power companies and a crumbling power transmission infrastructure. As such will this move really do anything to address Pakistan's power woes? I doubt it.

electricity is too expensive for people...that's why tyey don't or can't pay.......
Government should invest in cheaper means of power production or don't bother at all.

China is a net importer of Coal.

Whats up with the Thar Fields?

Side note, Chinese Coal Power Plants are really efficient, the new ones from 2004.

Many people here think I am boasting (which i do sometimes) but i have worked with heavy fuel oil boilers and generators..
The boilers are designed to burn fuel oil of upto certain sulpher content....above which the sulpher turns into sulphuric acid and corrode the high pressure metal tubes and they are neither easy nor cheap to replace.
Whoever has been buying incharge ir supplier of HFO for the boilers has been very corrupt and buying wrong type of fuel.

You did not add the rising price of fuel oil into the mix as reason of units shutting down.

That is EXACTLY the reason behind our current energy crisis. All of our hydel projects are producing energy upto their max capacity, the entire shortfall is coming from thermal generation and most of it is due to the plants that have been shut down because the CNG mafia will not let any gas go to these plants and then as a result we had to import crude furnace oil which ruined these boilers.

Also China is the largest producer of Coal with nearly 50% share in world production.

Why aren't Pakistanis approaching China's EXIM Bank or Development Bank for loans and allow Chinese companies to work on these projects.

Well, that's what I heard from PML-N on Geo News.

They do but severe mismanagement from the Pakistani side in the past 5 years keeps scaring the Chinese away.

Private companies have nothing to do with Government and their mismanagement.

how is anyone going to fix the line losses, theft, kunda, unpaid bills, and corruption of staff....this will fix power crisis not adding 2000MW

Chinese apologise to start Taunsa Hydel project

It is of the view that if Federal Government guarantees the project, it is ready to commence work on the project.

Punjab government led by CM Shahbaz Sharif had signed an agreement with the Chinese company half and a year back. Now the company has not only apologized for making feasibility report of the project but also refused to work on the project, with the demand that unless and until, the Federal Government provides guarantee, company would not start work.

Punjab government has offered the guarantee of the Bank of Punjab but the Chinese company refused to accept the offer.

Company is of the view that province have no arrangement of purchasing electricity.

I'm talking about Chinese power producers or heavy equipment makers partnering with local firms in Pakistan to set up private Coal thermal power plants. For e.g (& the only example I have is of) Reliance Power.

Reliance Power ties up $1.1 billion Chinese loans for Sasan project

Dont know about fuel, but its feasibility etc has been done already

That is a very good point.

The plant comprises three combine-cycle units – all of them already installed – and a stream turbine to be imported from China. If completed, the unit cost of electricity produced by the plant will be the cheapest compared to all the other independent power producers, official said. The project – which was supposed to be operational in 2010 – would produce electricity at about Rs8 per unit against existing power plants which produce the same at Rs12 per unit, he said.

Exactly, SS have pointed it over and over in his debates that the federal government was willfully not providing sovereign performance guarantees to producers. So while the right of power generation was vested with provinces in 18th amendment, the role of federal government was always crucial since it had the authority over financial aspect as federal government is the sole authority to print money and has a credit rating than the provincial government. I suggest that through an amendment, provinces should also be allowed to raise capital through bond and debt market, have a credit rating and thus allowing them to operate with complete autonomy on their investment and development projects.
