"Mushahidullah Khan is the most favourite person for this slot because of his roots in the province. Khan started his career as a trade unionist in Karachi and struggled hard politically in the city. During the second government of PML-N in 90s, Mushahid was appointed as Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) administrator."

He does his politics from Punjab duh because PML-N is based there

P.S It is rare for a Punjabi to have 'Khan' as surname.

No Sir. Many people in Punjab have the surname Khan as part of their history:

Pathans of Punjab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pathans of Punjab (Punjabi/Saraiki: پنجابی پٹھان; Pashto: د پنجاب پښتانه‎; also called Punjabi Pathans or Saraiki Pathans depending upon region of Punjab) are originally Pashtun people (Pathans) who have settled in the Punjab region of Pakistan and India.[1] These Pashtun communities are scattered throughout the Punjab and have over time assimilated into the Punjabi identity, both culturally and linguistically. On the other hand, those who are settled in the southern, western and northwestern parts of Punjab have gradually assimilated into the local Saraiki culture.

LAHORE - Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), after getting a simple majority in the National Assembly (NA) is all set to bring its own setup throughout the country, foremost amongst which would be replacing Sindh Governor Ishratul Ebad, sources revealed.
A report by a web-based news agency said the Sharifs think it is important to replace the Sindh governor.
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) governor in Punjab, Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmud, has already resigned saying the new government should bring its own governor in the province.
Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad is likely to be replaced by former governor Mamnoon Hussain or Senator Mushahidullah Khan. The move will be aimed at having a strong administrative grip in the province, where PPP and MQM have emerged as the leading parties.
For Balochistan governor, Abdul Qadir Baloch, is a strong contender, said sources.
In the restive province of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, Iqbal Zafar Jhagra may be the next governor owing to strong family links he has all over the province.

Something needs to be done to stop MQM killing people. Sad part is MQM and PPP will have Sindh government again

PPPP should not make this blunder because MQM will never stop killing people in Karachi and in the end Nawaz will have no option other than to start operation against MQM so that can be bad if MQM is in government
