PML-N govt to remove heads of loss-making national companies

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-N’s central leader Ahsan Iqbal has said that heads and chief executives of loss-making state-owned enterprises, including the Pakistan Steel Mills, PIA, Pakistan Railways and National Shipping Corporation would be removed with an objective to end financial haemorrhaging worth Rs 450 billion annually to the national exchequer.

“Applications for these apex posts will be advertised in media on the very first day of the new federal government and competent Pakistanis will be appointed with major task to end the losses to the public sector enterprises and make them self dependent,” Ahsan Iqbal said while talking to the members of Lahore Economic Journalists Association (LEJA) on Wednesday. Earlier, LEJA President Fakhir Malik and General Secretary Muhammad Luqman briefed Ahsan Iqbal on the working of the association.

Iqbal said the new government would inherit energy crisis, financial constraints, poor law and order and bad governance, all at the worst and critical level in the country’s history. However, he said the PML-N is committed to making every possible effort to mitigate the sufferings of people due to power outages. In this regard, short-term and long-term measures are being taken, he added.

“But it will be illogical to give any deadline or date for the end of load-shedding. This may lead to media trial of the new government,” Ahsan said. The PML-N leadership has evolved its strategy to control the energy crisis as well as to bring down the cost of energy generation, he said, adding that the focus of the PML-N government will be on coal, hydro, natural gas and solar power generation which are all indigenous resources.

Iqbal said the PML-N believed that without utilising the indigenous power generation resources, cheap energy will not available. He noted that cheap and smooth energy is also vital for industrial and agricultural growth of Pakistan. He said that a five-year development plan for Punjab was being developed and all the future budgets of the province would be prepared in line with this plan.

Ahsan Iqbal said that the PML-N wanted to make Punjab a model economy for other provinces and the federation. He claimed that the Punjab government had adopted zero tolerance for corruption over the last five years and added that a similar policy would be adopted at federal and Balochistan as well during the next five years. To bring the all stakeholders on board, he said, a Punjab governance and development conference is planned within the next couple of days after the Punjab chief minister takes oath of the office.

In this conference, the Punjab government will chalk out long-term policies and develop next five year budget of the province in consultation with the all the stakeholders, Ahsan Iqbal disclosed. He said that while having the federal government and ruling in Punjab and Balochistan, the PML-N would extend every possible support to the governments of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “It is time to compete in performance only, not in the fields of dharnas and strikes,” Iqbal said.

something which has been done many times..... why should the result be different?
these entities need much more autonomy with much lesser government representation on their boards, with the authority to hire and fire worker etc etc.
but to give this govt a benefit of doubt, let us see as to who will be the new heads of these entities? engineers etc or people with proper business management and finance background? our foolishness cannot be underestimated. if zardari can appoint a matric fail to run an institution, others have to ability to assign the task to wrong professionals..

Steel Mills, WAPDA and other institutions are a major drag on Pakistan’s
economy. These loss-making entities are presently bleeding to the tune
of Rs. 400 billion per annum. Therefore, reforming these state owned
institutions through a combination of privatization and restructuring
is fundamental.

PML(N) will initiate following actions to turn around the loss making
state enterprises:
 Appoint independent and professional boards who in turn
will appoint competent CEOs of state enterprises. Professional
competence and merit will be the only criteria for appointment of
boards and CEOs.
 The immediate task of the boards and CEOs will be to manage
these corporations effectively and to plug the losses.

Assign quantifiable targets and monitor on regular basis.
Performance evaluation will be carried out on regular basis to
ensure accountability.
 Stop every kind of political interference in the affairs of these
enterprises.
 Undertake deep-seated and urgent reforms in the relevant subsectors.
 Identify enterprises which need to be privatized and assign targets
to the privatization commission to ensure completion of the
privatization process within the assigned time frame.
 Operational standards will be prescribed and complete autonomy

They should privatize PIA and Pakistan steel mills do it as soon as possible

This is the the right thing to do.

Someone needs to be held accountable for the losses.

Now if PMLN assigns these jobs on merit or family connections remains to be seen.

I hope for the sake of our institutions it is based on merit.

However you must understand, in Nawaz's reality, a family connection would cloud his judgement, fool him into thinking this person is competent. He has done this a million times, just look at his track record of failures.
