ISLAMABAD - The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Tuesday announced that the government would continue Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).
Quoting a recorded statement of PML-N lawmaker Ashan Iqbal, a spokesman of BISP said, "PML-N was also in favour of this initiative," adding that the upcoming government intends to change name of the program as Pakistan Income Support Programme.
He also said that when BISP was planned, the PML-N was a coalition partner of the Pakistan People's Party Parliamentarian and the initiative was taken with the objective to provide financial assistance as well as social protection and safety net to economically distressed individuals and families.
He said that conducting a poverty survey was one of the major achievements of the programme. Based on the survey, BISP was providing targeted subsidies to all its beneficiaries, he added.
BISP, the spokesman said, had also introduced a graduation programme, which was based on a number of initiatives. Waseela-e-Haq programme offers interest free loans to the beneficiary families, up to Rs 300,000.
"The purpose of this loan is to help the beneficiaries to establish their own business and start earning their own livelihood.

Good move.

Now the economy should be back on track, thanks to this!

(sarcasm off)

.
instead they should have invested the money into Education and energy projects.would help alot in long run than giving 1000pkr per 3 months to a family

.
I am of the opinion that the overall economic situation of the country should be addressed, if there is good GDP growth there won't be a need for such programmes. Establish peace, sort out load shedding and foreign investments would come and industry would flourish. It would be better to implement better wages for the labor force by the govt. and create jobs, such programmes are no good. Better they could save the money from this and clear the circular debt. At least they changed the name to something politically unbiased.

excellent to hear the name change, however the money comes from UK AID package.. so nothing really to do with nawaz except for the name change...

Money used in it is from British Aid program... they keep the dollar and give the money, their black money saved in dollars, while the poor pakistanis get local currency devalued with every passing moment...

Such program should only happen or continue if the countries economy is strong & moving forward, then it is easy but a country like Pakistan where only few & poor people pay taxes, the rich does not pay any tax & the corruption is always high then there is no point of continuing it.

O bhai, why dont you guys understand. Government's role is always to promote incentives. Free access to education til matriculation is one of them. Government can't force childern to attend schools since a child's education decision involves external factors like parent's willingness, social norms etc.

Such program should only happen or continue if the countries economy is strong & moving forward, then it is easy but a country like Pakistan where only few & poor people pay taxes, the rich does not pay any tax & the corruption is always high then there is no point of continuing it.
Its middle class rather.

I didn't understand this part. I guess either you didn't explain properly or don't know how the currency system works. The rupee could be very-slightly strengthen by this, I didn't get how it will be devalued

Good to hear that. It will surely help the poor people buying food for the whole month, if the right/deserving people are receiving this money

Every developed nation has a income support programme. When the BISP was initiated it was solely relying upon the Government funds. Now UK does help the project and the bottom line is, poor people are being benefitted by this..

BISP is supported by direct cash transfers from USA since its inception.
