Like Bangladesh 90% of there hardware from china. They also bought other weapons from Russia and some other sources include eastern europe and Singapore.

India also supply them with artillary gun and other weapons including
Helicopter. Whether india like military junta or not, it is trying its best to gain foot onto Myanmar.

India was against the unelected Junta. But, it changed its course of thinking after it could not foresee any timetable for a change of ruling Junta. India needs natural gas very badly from Burma. It also needs a route to connect its NE with the outside world. BD was not willing to give access to NE.

So, India changed its policy and started to build a $100 million port in Sittwe to connect with NE. Burma has agreed to sell gas to India, but BD has not yet agreed to give India a pipeline route through its land. May be India will now build a LNG plant in Burma and import the gas by LNG tankers.

BAF had earlier asked for it.Good to see its going that way.BAF also asked Kurmitola air base to be separate for BAF use.Not sure what's the progress on that.

About procuring fighters after 2021,I think its too late.Most of our F-7s and all A-5s are around 20 years old.By 2021,they will be 30.I wonder they will even survive till then.

Except F-7 BG which are the newest addition to BAF in 2006.

Buying SAMs after 2014,don't know how wise is that.According to BAF report we require 5 layer air defence to keep our sky clean.Isn't 2014 too late?

Is Cox's Bazaar not a beach?

Pretty tactical location to have a fighter base. Extreme South just mouth at sea shores of Bay of Bengal.

Yes, Cox's Bazaar has the world's longest sea beach with a total length of 90km. You can take a jeep and go directly to Teknaf at the southern tip of Bangladesh over the beach line. You will see the beach at right and tree-topped mountains at your left. Deep inside the mountains there are elephants.

But, before you leave be sure to check when will be the next moon spring tide. A small miscalculation will take your jeep under 5 metre of high tide. Teknaf is about 50 km from Cox's Bazaar and BD ends here at the bank of Naaf Dariya (river). At the other side of this river lies the land of Burma.

There was a dispute about the border with Burma. Finally, when Ayub Khan was the President of Pakistan he settled the dispute by agreeing to the middle line of Naaf Dariya as the international border. Before that east Pakistan was claiming upto the other side of this Dariya.

Cox's Bazaar is a gateway to the Bay of Bengal. From this point northward, the Bay becomes narrower. The radars can observe the movements of an enemy navy fleet from here. Air force here can easily intercept an enemy fleet of ships. I believe the 3D radars will be capable to watch movements as far as Andaman Sea in the south.

The enemy cannot even land its troops in the beach here. It is because of the depth of high tide. Every 6 hours there is one high moon tide, the depth being about 5 metre, making it very difficult for even enemy amphibious vehicles to get any stable anchorage. The tides will either throw the vehicles to the shore, or conversely, they will be washed away into the sea in time of low tide. So, Cox's Bazaar has many advantages as an airforce base.

This is good if they can make this airbase operational to some extent. But, looks like AL govt. want to pick a fight with Myanmar and want to stop the look east policy all the way for the benefit of India.

Practically speaking, I do not think BD military can be strengthened with jargons against India. BD population will be divided on that and relationship with India will deteriorate. However, if it is Burma, then it is possible to unite the people and make our military strong.

It is not I am proposing a war against or foreseeing an immediate military threat from Burma. But I would say, so far Burma has resisted all our positive overtures with only negative responses. If it is our look east policy, then it can be realized through the asian highway. Probably, Burma's reclusive Junta wants it that way. Instead of a better bi-lateral relationship they may want a multilateral arrangement.

I do not think a strong airforce will necessarily mean that we are picking a fight against Burma. Instead, anti-Burma feelings can be used to build up our military. Once the military is strong, then it can fight with whoever tries to bully us.

A forward airforce base in Cox's Bazaar, therefore, should be seen in the light of total defence buildup, and not in the light of picking a fight with Burma. At the same time, BD must also take into consideration that the Burmese ongoing military buildup poses a considerable threat against the security of BD.

When Burma is threatening us with superior military buildup, we should support a govt reciprocal initiative. Instead of showing finger at only one enemy, we should see our surroundings in a 3D mind.

they are not removing the Border Guardsmen from the CHT are they?There will still be army forces in the CHT and they also have a heavy presence in the nearby Chittagong district.
as for Gen Azmi it's unfair but totally not unexpected from.

Exactly.I agree 200% on this sir.

Burmese have already built an air base near BD-Burma border,besides it has increased the number of troops near BD border.So we should try to shoot two birds with one bullet here.One is to counter Burmese build up and the second is to build a stronger army to prevent bullies.

But I am not at all happy with the procurement plans.It lacks urgency.

What we are seeing in CHT is very low level of withdrawal.During BNP rule,in 2004 alone,63 camps were removed as it was unnecessary.
The cantonments will still remain in CHT and besides BDR troops will be increased,according to BDR chief.

Sacking of Brig.Azmi is just a dirty political game,which is not new in Bangladesh.Unfortunate for us we lost a bright officer in the army.

About fighter base in cox bazar,well BAF had earlier submitted a report asking for it and Hasina just approved it.

Bangladesh needs to seriously take the issue of Myanmar's reinforced military presence along the border to safeguard its national security, a Dhaka-based think-tank says, reports bdnews24.com.

The Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS), a think-tank that deals with security issues in South and Southeast Asia, in a publication has suggested that there are many contentious issues with Myanmar and those need to be resolved for the national interest.

The issues such as Rohiynga and dispute over maritime boundary have dented the relations between the two neighbours in recent times, says an article of its publication, BIPSS FOCUS.

It says Myanmar's recent strengthening of military presence in the Rakhine state, which borders Bangladesh, is a big concern.

"Bangladesh needs to take Myanmar's recent military ambition seriously," the publication says in an article, titled "Bangladesh -Myanmar Relations: The Security Dimension."

It says Myanmar has increased movement of troops while construction of concrete pillars and barbed-wire fences along the border has been sped up.
